After finding scans of the old Shep Paine how-to leaflets, I decided to buy some of his books second-hand. The first arrived today:

These in their day were considered to be the be all and end all for modellers along with the Verlinden books, and even today you can still pick up a pointer here and there from them..

When this kit was first released I promised myself I would build one, but they were always sold out, so this one has finally made it into the stash for a build next year.

Thanks, it looks like it’s a hobby I’ll be able to stick with for a couple of years at least …

One of my most treasured modelling books 30 or so years ago was The Verlinden Way volume II, and though I also own a later issue, by then it had become more of a lengthy advert for his own products. I’ve been reading the first few chapters of the Shep Paine book this afternoon, and though so far I’ve not seen anything I didn’t already know, it’s still a good read and a useful refresher, really. Not to mention I would certainly recommend it to people new to modelling today.

Also funny to read lines written 37 years ago that sound oddly familiar, like:—

Today, we armor modelers are blessed with an abundance of precisely detailed kits beyond the wildest dreams of the struggling enthusiasts of those lean years [about 20 years ago]

one of the two frets is to upgrade the aircraft by adding undercarriage and props!......in 1/700 scale!....heres something to give a sense of scale

So the better half and I had a day to ourselves yesterday even though the kids are off for half term and so we went to the National Trust property at Hughenden.

Whilst she was in the shop I had a look in the second-hand book shop they have and picked this up for the princely sum of £1 - and it looks like it's never even been read!

It's a part of the war I know absolutely no nothing about and so have started reading it already!

A lot of people just associate the war in the desert, mid East as that which is well covered now, but there were little wars being fought all over the north East of Africa and in the Middle East. A look at the RR armoured car history can shed some light on that for you. I have a book somewhere which was written by someone that drove the RR in the Mid East as well as Africa.

Headmasters office at 8 30 in the morning!! To get there turn right at the Stug E, then past the 4 G's then left at the Stug A. Office is behind the skip full of green paint.
