Shops and Supplies -Ayrshire - West Coast [Scotland]

Nice to find a forum for me returning to a hobby after a 7/8 year break. Was very surprised that there are not more and better populated.

However, back to the topic of my post. Where do people, if they are on here, shop in the west coast now? The internet is handy but at times you just want to see stuff in the flesh!

I am sure that your area, along with the rest of the UK, has noticed a serious decline in the number of traditional model shops. I think I am one of the few lucky ones nowadays who has a model shop in his home town as most people here have to rely on mail order.

It seems to be a sad reflection of our ever changing times. I hope that you find somewhere within distance but I suspect you may end up having to travel quite a way.

I just hope I never loose mine!!

There is a model shop in Ayr and the Paisley Model Centre has ust changed hands. Thery can order what you require but they stock aircraft, dolls houses, few boats and car parts.

Scoonies are good for boats and cars and they come down for some of the shows too.

What are you looking for Greig? What kind of models?

Yes there is one in Ayr. The last i was in was mainly RC things. Have not been in in a while and didnt see much point. The other in Ayr was very good but closed after only a few years of being open.

Paisley Model Centre.......forgot about that! But still a 70 mile round trip for me from here. Are there still a few in Glasgow?

I am returning after a while away and will mainly be building/modding kits from the usual suspects and will be looking for card etc etc. Plus anything for diaoramas. I have no plans to return to RC...........well not yet! :thinking: But would love someone to show me some decent helicopters to see if they can tempt me!

Scoonies? New to me, do tell! What shows....do tell that too.

Looks like i will have to live with the trek to Glasgow/Paisley or use the net.

Yes like you i have noticed the change and looks like that i may have to travel. People want everything ready done!! I ahve got involved because a child of a friend got, God forbid, a kit which needed building!! "Well hawd me back" [ Scots slang ] So i said i would have a go for them. The rest as they say...........is history..............sort of! So i started looking for suppliers. I am using a large Edinburgh shop for some stuff, but wanted local supplier if i could.

I was chatting to the owner of my local model shop, some of the parent's didn't even know what a plastic kit was! It seems like a whole generation has skipped out on the whole Airfix / Scale Modelling.

Saying that though, it seems like Grandparents are introducing kids to models now.

There is a model shop in Duke Street in Glasgow that has helicopters, etc. He is into cars but has a lot of plane bits too and a couple of helos las time I was in, Bell Street there is a shop specialising in plastic kits, one for dolls houses nearby I believe and the Glasgow Model Centre is full of kits of tanks, planes and cars.

Scoonies are in Kircauldy but a phonecall they are helpful and willing to post. They will be in Glasgow for the GRMBC Start of Season sail in May. If you want something specific always better to give them a call.

and if you get to Edinburgh ... Marionville.

Paisley Model Center has moved so be sure you know where you are going!

John Shevlin in Uddingston has an aladdin's cave and DTS Models in EK have something of everything.

The other thing to do is visit the model shop and see what posters they have. Go along to a local club and ask the members. Not sure if there is a boat club in Ayr but there is one in Largs (although they lost parts of the roof in the gales and parts of the walls have to be demolished to repair the building).

Thanks for the informative reply. I will get some time in the next few weekends to get a run through to places and see what they have. I will be in Linwood tomorrow so will swing past PMC and have a look.

Alan,have they lived on another planet for the past few years ! it really makes you think if the manufacturers got it wrong in recent years,perhaps failing to promote something instead of resting on the fact that plastic kits used to sell well to youngsters.

The percentage of people in these hobbies was never that large and simple economics dictates that they should have tried to "generate" interest. No one seemed to care. A friend of mine put it well when he said that the "old hobbies", not just this one, decided they couldn't compete with video etc etc and didnt try.

Maybe i missed what they tried to do, but so did everyone else.
