I have tried allsorts to get stuff into the country duty free. Even tried having the parts sent thru europe then in thru the back door. They still got me, the duty was charged by Frankfurt customs as it went thru Germany on it's way to the UK.
You have to realise that the customs chaps have a job to do, and that is to collect taxes for the government.
Every week, there must be millions of packages coming into this country, and the customs people aren't idiots, they have seen it all before. In fact they can sieze the goods if they suspect tax evasion is going on, and fine you for the pleasure.
I have been importing for a few years now, and have noticed that less and less is getting thru without being checked and the duty demanded, so now, if I have to import bits, I just calculate in the cost of duty and other rip offs, and bite the bullet, or buy from the UK. Occasionally I don't have to pay, but that is a rare occurance nowadays.

Yeah i bought a Tamiya kit from a U.S. company which i paid $50.00 for on my credit card, then then the delivery charges were $25.00, when the kit arrived i was hit for a further £12.00 customs taxes, the kit was rare as tamiya had stopped making them but still it seemed overly expensive>
