    Wellington Whimpy

Did you see the programme on BBC2 about the Wellington.

Based around building the aircraft in under 24 hours. Fantastic achievement & showed the expertise in Britain at that time to produce such a complicated piece of equipment. Good old Barnes Wallis.

Not realised a few things. Most built aircraft in WW11 after the Hurricane & Spitfire. Amazing the number of crafts which went into it. Sewing the fabric for the covering to the decorator painting on the roundels. Then the aircraft taking to the air in 23 hours so many minutes after construction.

A really superb piece of history. So many of those there, girls & boys, one of 14, said their piece in the programme. Also amazed that some of the women working on the aircraft waited 2 and 3 years to see their men returning from combat. Using a Churchill characteristic some People some Nation.

Just a bit of a P.S......I don't watch T.V. 'cos we 'aint got a licence...heaven! I can watch it on the 'I' player' though. Thanks for the thread..

The joiner I served my time with during the 60's, was a foreman involved with the building of the Wellington bomber at Chester (Now Aerospace)

It is on record that in one month 50 came off the production line!!

As most of the people involved in the construction were women, he had a great time inspection the inside of fuselages...or so he kept telling anyone who would listen!

It was a good show. I was surprised that it was the third most produced a/c after the Hurricane and Spitfire.
