A very moving story Jason. We can never thank those brave young men enough for the sacrifice they made so we can enjoy the freedoms we now take for granted.
Seeing the veterans on TV, so proud and yet so modest, brought tears to my eyes.

I changed over from TMS just after your posting Tim and I have been in bits ever since. The stories have been so humbling. I thought the lady radio commentator handled the calls very well. One of the light hearted stories was the chap who had been a naughty lad on the eve of D Day and was given an open arrest to allow him to be available for D Day. However he was docked a days wage. So he always told his family he was the only soldier not to be paid for taking part on D Day.

About 10 years ago our family had a great experience.

We were a boating family & from Jersey we journeyed up the Seine to Paris.
It was the 100 centenary year of the Eiffel Tower.

On our journey we cruised past the remains of the Mulberries some experience.

On the way back each night we stayed in the small ports along the Normandy
landing coast. That was some holiday.

Just had a formation of C47s on the flight path to Wright-Pat AFB at about 2000' over my house. A classy looking & sounding airplane. Too fast to get my camera fired up. PaulE

I am in the Loire Valley - I heard 3 aeroplanes pretty high up, couldn't make them out with the naked eye , grabbed the camera and after enlarging images - discovered they were Piper L4 Grasshoppers . checking online , they were on their way to Normandy for this evening !

Some shots from my trip a few years ago - great statues and memorials there , lots of tanks on display year round on the streets and beaches .....as well as too many memorials to mention . It really is a must see experience .Click image for larger version

Had this chap fly over twice today. Not sure if it's been doing the Biggin Hill to Dover tourist trip or taking part in the commemorations. Quite a sight in a blue sky on a sunny evening (n.b not my photo).

Been following Guest all day on twitter , putting up the enigma intercepts as they happenned in 1944.
Some interesting info as to exactly what the germans transmitted back to central command.

I watched the D Day commemorations on TV. I listened to the stories the veterans told. Modest and so, so brave. I was moved to tears. We must never forget that the lives we live are thanks to their sacrifices.

Ian your post hasn't been forgotten.

I remember D-Day, VE Day, Battle of Britain Day and the most obvious Remembrance Day. I remember the sacrifices on both sides and never take for granted our freedoms that were paid for in blood, sweat and tears.

Typical many don't care to memorialize or indeed even recognize D DAY. Too many years of soft living and fretting over petty problems
have desensitized and demoralized us folks in the West.
i havnt forgotton, i am close to the Normandy Landings, Arnheim and the bomber war over Europe due to family connections, im ex military myself........i just choose the remember it in my own quiet way
