    Any replacement for Klear

    Hi guys.

I've just returned to modelling after some time out of the hobby, been grabbing all my tools together and looking for kits to buy. Now i'm on a puzzler, seems that johnson's klear has been discontinued some time ago and that leaves me in a sticky situation. While I see its available on places like ebay for £30 justifing that to the wife might be an issue.

I've been looking around forums, webpages etc and there is so many "tried" products used to replace the stuff but i'm looking for something that's easy to get hold of and is proven to work. I'm looking for personal recommendations from anyone really. I'm based in the UK so its UK based products i'm looking for.

    Thanks all

The new Pledge stuff is slightly different, kind of milky. Some say it's as good as the old stuff, some don't like it. Worth a try I suppose

This stuff is a bit more expensive but I've seen some good reviews

Quick Shine® Floor Finish in floor & carpet cleaners at the home of creative kitchenware, Lakeland

I haven't tried either myself as I only get through a teaspoonful each year. my bottle should last me a while yet

The new 'Klear' works just fine, no problems at all. Just as good as the old stuff. Sometimes I think people just like to nit-pick over such as this, so take no notice of the knockers!lol

Here is a picture of the bottle. It's available in most supermarkets around £4.00 for a lifetime's supply......

        Cheers,

        Ron

Speaking as someone who has most of a bottle of the old and a bottle of the new and someone who has actually tried both! I can verify they both behave exactly the same despite the milky appearance of the new vs old. The one and only thing I don't like about the new is the perfume, it gives me a bit of a headache after being cooped in the cave for an hour or two with it, but that's just me, I avoid perfume counters in dept stores for the same reason.

Don't listen to the nay sayers, must negative reports I've read come from people who haven't tried it.

            Hi,

I've never used the old Klear but the new Pledge stuff seems OK, not having chance to compare.

I don't have a problem with the smell, I decant a small amount into a small air tight container and only have the lid open for the short time I'm using it.

I got mine from Wilkinsons, £4 and change.

            Tony.

              Hi there

The new "Klear" is fine and dries very quickly. The only word of warning I can give don't let it pool and dry on light coloured paint especially white as it will appear yellow. I have not used the Lakeland product but have heard good reports about it. Vaughan

I've tried the Lakeland product and it works well. Very glossy. I actually thought it gave a better gloss than old Klear but my test was on two different models so there were a lot of variables.

The new Klear/Pledge I haven't tried but the vast majority of people who have reckon it works well,as evidenced by the chaps above.

                Cheers

                    So it has.

I've still got plenty of old Klear and the remains of my sample (courtesy of a fellow modeller) of the Quickshine.

If this carries on we'll have to start buying gloss acrylic model varnishes ar ten times the cost!

                    Cheers

All interesting & as I am about to flood my latest model with Klear & thought I would experiment.

Her in Doors has in her "stash" of cleaning stuff a quarter bottle of old Klear. Now in my stash. Also in my stash is a bottle of the new Klear stuff.

Put a coat of each next to each other on the same airbrushed acrylic paint.

Went on the same, looked the same as it went on & looked the same when dry. The only difference noted is that the new Klear is a bit more smelly. Also the old Klear is now back in her stash.

QED as far as I am concerned no difference.

                      But wait for it !!!!

                      Laurie

Thanks alot for this. I've purchased a bottle. Going to test it out on a couple of cheap kits and see the results.

Actually, I've been contemplating using some of mine to bring the dining room table up in a nice shine...
