Don't you just hate it when this happens

Your one step from finishing your latest kit and one moment of inattention and you've just ruined all your work.
Yes that's just what I have done with a full load of gloss varnish and one moment of inattention I split the best part of it on my nearly completed build and here's the results ggggrrrrrrrr!!!!!!??.Click image for larger version

I would probably sand off the affected area and redo but then I have to find some replacement decals and being and old airfix could be challenging.

What kit/scale is it Peter? I've been given a large bag of left-over decals and might have some suitable.

Before sanding, as you have nothing to lose Peter, I would try a coat of varnish.

I would have taken as much off as I could with a brush and brushed the rest out the best I could..If a water base a shed load of water might have helped as well.
Past experience has taught me that its a lot easier while still wet.
I am sure that some replacement decals are easy to find.

If it’s any consolation Peter, I managed to knock my enamel thinners over my tomcat build earlier this year.
The air turned blue I can tell you!!
I know that some of the lacquer based gloss varnishes can be sanded back smooth using a fine grade, without effecting the decals underneath, providing you have several coats of varnish on.

Hope you can find a solution

No luck I'm afraid. All the US decals I have are WW2.
