    Does size matter?

    …I’m thinking it does sometimes.

I got some 1/72 fighter kits in the post the other day and I can see why most of you do 1/48.

I’d forgotten how small 1/72 WWII fighters were, they’re tiny!!

I was used to building 1/72 Tomcats and Tornados and the size difference between them and WWII fighters is huge!

I was really amazed by this (although most of you are already probably well aware of this) because I've not really done any WWII (or post WWII) fighters in years.

I’ve almost finished my current build (probably tonight) and then I’m going to do a dinky little 1/72 Focke Wulf 190 to pass the time until the GB’s.

    Interesting Drew. Just finished a 1/48 Mosquito & I found for my first 1/48 build a huge difference between 1/72 & 1/48.

Not just the physical size but also the detail building in a 1/48. The Mosquito took a long time & thought I would build a 1/72 to compensate.

Got a 1/72 Hellcat Gruman & started on Sunday. Admittedly low in detail building but I am already at the paint fuselage point.

I've exclusively built 1/72 previously and I'm actually quite looking forward to doing some of the 1/48s in my stash as I find 1/72 really fiddly.

I think I'll stick with 72nd scale for bigger aircraft though - bombers and the like. Not sure where I'd put a 1/48 Lancaster.

Space is an important consideration! I've got a loft full of models that are not on display for this reason.

Don't forget that the detail parts in a larger scale kit can be just as fiddly as anything in a 1/72 kit and there will be a lot more of them!

        Cheers

I find 1:48 a good size compromise but it really the 1:32 that I really like. So far since getting back into the hobby I have completed 3 1:48 scale fighters and have a fourth under way but these I regard as just 'work-ups', quick wins, before I get my 1:32 builds under way... That should be in about a week's time, with a Hasegawa P40.

Planning to get some display cabinets for them but I am lucky, I have a 5 story Victorian town house and while the lower ground floor is my office, I only share the rest of the house with my son... I have one room available that I can dedicate to displaying models and also have some display space in my conference room, enough for at least 10 models, maybe more in Ikea Detolf units.

Right now my little 1:48's are sat next to me on the shelf on my general office with just room for all four...

Wonderful to have all this space....

            Oh for the storage!!

I'm hoping I might build some in the loft as that's just about the only place I've got the space. With regard to scale I started with 1/72 but personally as soon as I'd done a 1/48 there was no going back, I just prefer the extra detail you you get (although 1/72 has come along way since I were a lad) as for 1/32 that's just a pipe dream for me until I get a house the size of Barry

Not sure what happened there the end of my last post was supposed to say:

'a house the size of Barry's LOL!

              Regards

Likewise, I don't have room for a 1/32 plane although, as 1/35 scale helicopters aren't totally out of the question (as long as there aren't too many) I may be able to fit in a 1/48 WWII fighter or two...and maybe check out the measurements of modern day fighters (like the SAAB Grippen, Tornado and of course, my favourite, the Tomcat).

The real question is does Scale matter. Size is always relevant...

As its been pointed out large multi engined bombers in 1/48 do rather fill a shelf, as does a 1/32 scale WWII fighter.

I prefer 1/48 scale for aircraft. A good size to work with and behold. Armour I would rather 1/35. (I Have yet to take a pop at a 1/48 armour but it will happen one day).

It has also been mentioned that there is much more detail in the large scale kits. However, having seen some of the new tool 1/72 scale aircraft on here, the detail on those is quite incredible at times!

My biggest bug bear is the usual one there are just not enough kits in all the same scale, a thing 1/48 scale is fast bridging and 1/72 Scale gets close to with the 1/76 come HO/OO scale jobbies.

I admit to saying that the difference between 1/35 and 1/32 is tolerable, but some times it can be just wrong enough to stand out like a sore thumb.

I know this is going a bit off topic, but whats the deal with all the scales in ship modelling. 1/700, 1/600, 1/1200 (!) 1/350 1/400 and others besides?

I would love a few of the 1/32 scale aircraft I have seen on here but just dont have the room for them. Building them just to put in a box and hide away has never really appealed to me personally. "might as well have left it in the stash" sort of thing.

A suggestion that might work for some people who lack room and want to Model 1:32 scale aircraft.

Why not get one or two of these on the link, they have a small footprint and can display 5 x 1:32 aircraft, single engine inside and larger ones on top. When you get more kits than display space you can rotate them, keeping excess in boxes. This is what museums do!!! Just a helpful thought, I hope so anyway!

It seems to me (unscientifically I might add) that 1/48 scale is still probably the most popular for aircraft modellers and has a range of subjects similar to 1/72. There are a lot of older kits still available in 1/72. But 1/32 appears to be growing fast and there is much more choice than there was only a few years ago. I wonder why this is. Maybe with modern techniques larger detailed injection molded kits are more economically viable, though I would hardly describe them as cheap.

And Barry I might just take a look at a display case like that,I'm sure I could squeeze one in........somewhere.

                      Cheers

You should try some sweet 1/144th kits, now they are a fiddle, excellent casting though

I've got one of these, add a light to the top and it turns out alright.
