BBC news today.

The Tate Gallery have advertised a job. £ 40,000 PA for "Head of Coffee".........When questioned about it. They said it was comparable with the salaries for other heads of department....... Head of Coffee???? for Christ Sake. I wonder what that entails?????:smiling5::smiling5::smiling5::smiling 5:

Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.....
seriously, nice to see someone in catering getting a decent wage for once. It’s probably one of the most underpaid and overworked sectors of employment. Perhaps if they had called it a catering manager there wouldn’t be any fuss.

I would throw farming into that mix too. Also farming is the most dangerous sector in the UK.

Just had a look at the job description, and to be fair, there is a lot involved: sourcing, buying and roasting(!) the coffee; building a brand for the Tate and writing business and development plans with responsibility for meeting growth targets; management of the budgets; managing four outlets; recruiting and training staff etc.

However, I do agree that there are a lot more worthwhile jobs out there that are paid significantly less - most public sector jobs, teaching, nursing etc etc.

I’m not sure that matters Peter. If it pays more, then that’s your next career step if you are motivated by money.....if other things are more important then maybe it’s not....I always thought that job satisfaction was part of the employment package.
In pure economic terms I’m sure a head of coffee will generate more income for the Tate than a curator when their labours are defined as income per hour worked, so perhap, in pure business terms, curators are less valuable to the organisation than a head of coffee And the salaries have been set accordingly.

I’m sure there are others that look at curators salaries and think they do a job that is more valuable to society when compared, and therefore wonder why a curator is paid more than they are.

Agree to a point. But if the job (minimum wage etc) isn't paying the bills then it doesn't matter how much you enjoy it. You have to think of priorities.

Nip down to Sainburys, buy a few jars, trans-ship them into other jars - get the child to do a label (always works) and there you go new coffee. Ahhh! you say, what about the roasting, well there you lock yourself in your office, set up the samdwich maker, sprinkle a bit of coffee on the hot plate and heat it up, then waft the fumes under the office door....
