Hello from an old 1/35 military modeller...

Hi all

I've joined these forums, having recently had my interest in military modelling re-kindled by a chance conversation. I'm hoping to get some fresh ideas here to help me get back into the hobby.

Building 1/35 scale WWII stuff was my main hobby from about the age of 8 until my late teens. Then, Tamiya seemed the only readily available make, so I never really looked at other manufacturers. Over the years since I've occasionally bought various kits - from scale bikes & cars to military, mecha and movie characters, and I also got into electric and petrol off-road RC for a few years. Luckily, due to my job developing videogames, I've often been able to excuse buying kits for "reference" (sometimes with real justification, too!).

Having done a major 'down-sizing' move a year or so ago, I ruthlessly car-booted or chucked away everything I'd accumulated; umpteen pots of humbrol enamels and small brushes, loads of boxes of parts from kits, and stacks of RC gear.

But I recently found three Tamiya Military Miniatures boxes that had escaped the cull: German Infantry Weapons, German Assault Troops and BMW R/75. That got me hankering a bit, and then following the previously mentioned chance conversation, I couldn't resist trawling around online to see what's currently available.

So, the upshot is that I'm about to order the Dragon King Tiger (Porsche turret - I have a soft spot for "Porkers") Premium Edition. It'll be the first time I've encountered etched parts mixed with plastic, so I may well be posting soon, asking n00b questions about various aspects of the build. Of course, if anyone has any alternative/additional recommendations I'd be interested to hear those too.

Out of interest - what games have you been involved in the development of - I'm a big fan of BF2 and working on the Warhammer 40,000 mod - Battlefield 40k!

So - scale models and computer games are not mutually exclusive!

Hi Alan, thanks for the greeting. Yes, model kits are really useful reference to build 3D computer models from. The first games the company made were Carmageddon and Carmageddon 2 for the PC, and quite a few car kits were purchased for those projects. We've worked on other projects (several of which never saw the light of day) that also involved cars - rally, high perfomance etc., and 'fantasy' vehicles have featured in a lot of our work, but most of that remains NDA due to being sub-contracted etc, so I can't go into details. Our most recent release was Novadrome on Xbox 360 LA, and right now we are converting a list of Atari classic arcade games, along with an 'evolution' version of each one, again for 360 Live Arcade.Unfortunately I don't do production art any more, as I work on game design and sound effects - so it looks like my days of blagging kits on expenses are over!

(Oh, and I'm a big BF2 fan too. FPS games are what I do when I'm not working/sleeping/drinking!)

Hi n0bby and a warm welcome to the forum. I remember doing things like the Tamiya 1/35 stuff in my own youth and it certainly was the stuff to build in those days. I remember my best Christmas ever when my parents bought me a Tamiya King tiger and an American Tank of some sort. Both had the twin gearbox set ups with the remote control battery box.

I really enjoyed building both of those models. I also had a lot of smaller stuff but the one kit I always aspired to but could never afford was the 1/35th Tamiya 88mm Flak Gun. What a stunning kit and if you could pair one up with the Half Track, that would have been heaven for me.

Anyway we look forward to hearing a bit about you and seeing what you are into nowadays.

What was it about the 88mm & half-track that was so alluring? That combo was exactly what got me into military modelling in the first place - I saved my pocket money for months to afford them. Am I mistaken, or couldn't you once buy the 8 ton half track (in passenger trim, with multiple rows of seats) and 88mm flak as a single kit? I'm almost sure this is what I feverishly saved for...

I can remember the box top picture quite clearly for the combination model. I think it's great attraction was it's shear size and level of detail which, in it's day, was a class leader. The fact that the 88mm could be deployed or put back into road trim was also fascinating. The whole kit was really well ahead of it's time and I would dream of buying one for a number of years. The trouble was my pocket money always went on smaller stuff and I remember my first ever diorama was the 3.7 cm Pak gun.

I will also confess to having built the Half Track too, what a superb kit that was....I remember saving my pocket money as a kid just to buy that one alone !!

Hello, The tamiya 88mm, sheer beauty.....

Loved it (till I had a clear out! all I have left is an Italeri Dodge ambulance, somewhere...) and the 88mm was available on it's own. May even buy it again...

I think that was a large part of the appeal - with such a vast box and cool artwork (it's come back to me now, clear as day!) the kit had to be great!

That was another favourite of mine from those early modelling days! Ahh, memories...
