    Castle

I want to get my lad a wooden castle for X-mas, a bit early I know but....

I'm looking for the sort of thing that he can use these plastic Knight figures that are in all the shops just now .

To buy a castle is £50 or so and having seen whats on offer I need to have a sturdier (read BIGGER) one made.

Does anyone know where I can get "free" plans for making one??

Ta for any help in advance...

OK, this is easy to do providing you dont mind the whole thing weighing a ton... But does it HAVE to be made of wood?

The best off the shelf castles on the market are by a company called GW (as a Paranoia player I know you have heard of em...) and yes...they are all around £50 on Ebay and tend to be two wall sections and a gatehouse and thats all. If you want your lad to have a SERIOUS castle then its time to talk turkey regards scale:

In 25/28MM scale a full castle will require a 6ft by 4ft base (which you just know you will want to landscape...).For a basic Norman castle you will need to build 5 stn wall sections, 2 short wall sections, 6 towers, a gate house, a postern gate section and a Keep. All of these will require basic carving for stone effect and wood is the very worst medium as any detail will be prone to splintering with use.

I have a 25mm model of the knights hospitaler castle in Jorden which i built in plaster over a chicken wire and balsa frame, its mounted on 3 6x4ft boards when set up and despite getting on for ten years old its still intact. Id recomend you use this as your build medium, you can carve plaster with a drevel power tool with fine grinder wheel and then prime, paint and varnish. It will take a pounding.

If you would like I can make a set of plans and instructions for you, just think about the size and complexity then think about what your lad would like to have and why he wants it (wargaming aka warhammer or just play?).

Just let me know what you need,

      Hi, thanks for the reply.

It's a "play" castle I'm looking for, however as a bit of a wargamer I'd love to see your 25mm castle!!
