The bent finger syndrome.

Take a look, oh my, at my very poor little bent finger

Tends to wrap itself around handles and things & linger

Now tested for Covid, swabbed in the throat locked in

Until my op no worries gota two big bottles of gin

So until Tuesday, op day, I will have a great grin

But for a few days then my finger is going to be a bit ginger

I have Dupuytren's contracture beginning to affect the ring finger on my left hand. It's really not bad yet and I can still place my hand palm down with all the fingers straight. There is a lump and some thickened tissue in my palm that is sometimes a bit sensitive.

The docs said that it might be due to Scandinavian heritage, though if I have that it is lost in the mists of time

Eventually, assuming I'm still here, it will need some treatment.

Mine is a bit closer to home Steve. My father a carpenter & joiner had the same problem where the sinews bunch up on the palm just below the finger.

Asked Doc what they were etc.

One day my father said to me I have those things. Silly blighty did not ask the Doc bet he thought they were cancerous.

Any way finger thing is dead easy. Two ways of doing it. Scalpel.

I opted for the second way. 10 lb lump hammer arrives at the hospital tomorrow. :flushed:

I’ve got one of those Steve...left hand ring finger. Always thought it was due to either guitar playing or my incipient RA. Nice to know it’s because I’m a Viking!

Apparently it is a condition which is much more common in Scandinavia, at least according to the doctor I saw at Solihull Hospital, who I would hope knew what he was talking about

Yours looks quite similar to mine. The lump is below my ring finger, but I can feel a thickening of the tissue below my middle finger too. Luckily it really is not a problem at the moment and does not affect me adversely in any way. It also seems to be progressing very slowly and I've hardly noticed any change in the last 12 months...which is good.

That sounds like Depuytren's contracture. The tissue thickens and contracts, eventually causing the fingers affected to 'close up'. meaning that they will not straighten. What was your diagnosis?

Obviously I'm not a doctor, so I can only repeat what I have been told by those who are. I was told that nobody knows what causes it but that there is a large genetic component as you and your dad show. I was asked if my father had it, but he died many years ago in his early fifties, so almost certainly to young to develop this. It generally occurs in people over fifty and is more common in men.

I was also told that there is no evidence that manual jobs, vibrating machinery or anything else of that ilk are a cause. I played drums for years and used both grips. That left hand ring finger is quite an important component of an unmatched/traditional grip.

Is that what it is...my ring finger has occasionally locked when curled and it's excruciatingly painful to straighten unless I pull on it. Thought it could be signs of arthritis. I have Scandinavian heritage although I look Chinese...the plot thickens.

Sorry to here you have this problem Laurie...lay off the gin until the anesthetic kicks in and operation over. Ask the Doc if you can have it instead of the saline drips. :smiling6:

Hi Tim, it doesn't lock anymore but has that robotic click when I move it. Will check it out...the joys of old age. :tired:
