I'm back, full of General election fever,

    Hi Guys

it seems ages, but I am back. i have done virtually no modelling for a couple of weeks due to a number of things all happening at once:

1 - Tina's chemo is ongoing and progressing well,
2 - my son returned to uni on Monday so I prioritised spending time with him. Leaving an Island where Covid is virtually eliminated to the UK, a bit of a worry. Also, when he returns home at Christmas (hopefully) he will have to self-isolate for at least a week before he can join us.
3 - my ground fridge arrived and had to be buried in the garden - https://www.groundfridge.com - a real 'man-cave'. We plan to use it for home made wine and to store our own Grown fruit and veg.
4 - Guernsey's new and unique General Election - one like nowhere in the world! I sure you are all familiar with the 'one man on vote' concept, well, we do things a little different.

a little background - we are self-governing with our own government which consists of 40 MP's, 2 are representatives from Alderney, the remaining 38 are elected in Guernsey and are known as Deputies but are the equivalent of your MPs. Given pir small size, having 38 separate constituencies is not practical so up to 2016 we had 7 constituencies which each returned Either 5 or 6 Deputies. All voters had the same number of votes as the number of Deputies their constuency elected - so I could vote for up to 6 of the 12 candidates who stood in my parish.

so far so good - 1 man, 6 votes.

But this year is different - we have what is called Island Wide Voting where the whole Island is one constituency which elects all 38 Deputies. This manes that all voters can use up to 38 votes, to vote for any of the 119 candidates!

    yep, 1 man, 38 votes!

to make it a little easier, all of the 119 individual manifestos have been included in a single 200+ page book!

          Tim .
Good news about Tina, a relief.
I had a look at the "Ground Fridge " ingenious concept, does look like a cross between a buriedAnderson shelter and that German Machine Gun Box I build some time ago . Hope you not digging it in by hand !
As for the election, boy someone had fun writing that up

            Hi Guys

Paul - Brexit is a doddle compared to island Wide Voting.
Tim - if only it were simple ...
Dave - not so must a fever more a slightly raised temperature.
John - yes it is clever, it has a hollow metal hand rail, the top end fits into a hole in the door, in the lower end is a battery powered fan so it sucks air in, drawing it down the hand rail which forces the warmer, air from the top out of a second vent at the top of the door. What is also nice is that it comes coplete with all of the shelving already in place, ready to use. Here is a photo before it was buried and in place

it will be very interesting to be faced with a ballot paper with 119 names on it! we have opted for postal voting so we can vote from home.

Very interesting Peter, some nice stones you have surrounding it. Did you have to have planning permission ? The planners here would have a field day thinking about if it would increase the ratable value so they could charge you ! .

                What a brilliant post.
Glad the Chemo is going well, my Daughter is off to Uni (1st year Paramedic student) a Week Saturday, so its going to feel a bit strange for a while, but she is really looking forward to it.
As for the voting, can imagine Trumps head would literally explode trying to work that out.
The underground fridge is interesting a very mini fall out shelter !,

I like the look of the ground fridge.
Unfortunately I would have to move all my buried Spitfires to make room for it

                      Hi Pete.

I'm very pleased to hear that Tina's chemo is going well - that must be your main priority. My daughter is back at Reading University and we're joking with here that they won't let her home for Christmas. They seem to have all sorts of contingencies in place though, so fingers crosses = my concern is that we won't be able to travel to Snowdonia in November for a holiday.

The ground fridge is a monster! Looks quite cosy and would make a very literal 'man cave'. Might get one myself.

As for the election, talk about making things complicated. Reading all of those manifestos must be an 'interesting' experience.

Thinking about that election a bit further Pete, is there anyone on the island not actually standing for election in some capacity....

John - when we bought the property it had a semi-derelict house on it which we demolished. Those stones were the foundation stones the house sat on. Yes, planning permission was needed, unfortunately when the current list if exempt developmentS was drawn up the Groundfridge did not exist. I had not thought About the impact on our rateable value. Interesting, our rates are calculated on the external floor area of the building. i wonder how they will try to calculate it for a shere.

Steve - good luck to your daughter. At least it is not my son's first year away. He is studying for his masters so it is his first year at this uni but he has 3 years experiance. It was strange taking him to the airport rather than to the uni by car. Even though he had 3 suitcases there were still some things he could fit in so we will be posting some stuff to him.

Steve - we were occupied so it was FW109s we had to move.

Ralph - thanks. Glad things are looking up for you too.

Peter - thanks re Tina. I do wonder if the Government is trying 'scare' students into behaving. It does look as though it is going to get very restrictive on campus for a while. I hope she settles in fine. Assuming Joseph can return at Christmas he will have to self-isolate for a minimum of 7 days, possibly 14.

Tim - a few of us. I personally know nearly 40 of the candidates!

Steve - good plan, help pay for more models.

                            Peter
