    Stupid stuff

There's a thread on here about stupid stuff we do so you don't have to. You know - lots of interior parts missed out and spilled paint, glue and blood - that kind of stuff.

Here's one that someone else has done which drives me to distraction.

You all have CD/DVD cases yeah? How many of them have a moulded piece with a central fastener to hold the disc. All of them right? How many have recesses moulded around the outside edge of the disc so you can grab the disc with your fingers once you've released it - most of them right?

Now how many of them have the finger recesses with a ridge moulded around the disc so you can't grab it even after you've released it? Aaaaaarrrrrggggghhhhh!

Another of my favourites is companies that send out online job application forms with boxes for you to complete - in PDF format! (Yeah. I know you can 'unlock' PDF files nowadays but why do you need to be a 'puter expert to fill in an application form?)

Feel free to add any other stupidities you've come across - I suspect there are LOTS!

Mine is the current trend in online banking of sending you a confirmation text message with a number code in it. I live in a very rural area with poor mobile signal. To check my cards or bank accounts I therefore have to stand outside until I get the log in code. OK in summer, not so great if it’s raining.....

Oh, and with respect to CD/DVD cases......the disc is easily released if you push gently with one finger on the moulded bit in the middle. The disc will then pop off onto your finger so you can lift it out........

What finger recess with a ridge? Just press the tabs in the middle, that hold the centre hole of the disc, with your index finger and the disc comes up so your index finger goes into that hole and you can put your thumb against the edge of the disc.

PDFs can have form elements into which you can type stuff. If you then save the PDF, it will retain the things you typed in.

Sounds easy when you put it like that. If only they hadn't moulded that little ridge which stops my thumb gripping the edge. Still, turning the box upside down does allow the disc to fall onto my finger, and it doesn't take very long to pick up the other discs in the set which have fallen out 'cos the central fixing has worn or broken.

I didn't know that. The forms I have seen didn't have that option so maybe I've just been unlucky and got forms created by folks who didn't know how to create those elements.

Reminds me of when I retired last year.....the company asked me to carry out occasional bank working arrangements so they could still access my knowledge and experience. I agreed, but said it would be from home only as I was retiring to Somerset, forty miles away, and didn’t want to commute that far. They agreed, and I was therefore given a laptop configured for remote working with access to all drives and programs on the network. It worked great for a month, then stopped being able to access email. I contacted IT to be told I needed to dock it on a physical connection to the network at work at weekly intervals so the antivirus and software updates could be uploaded. Apparently I just got lucky on the first couple of weeks. It really wasn’t much use to me, so i used my own laptop nefariously during the period they needed me to assist....

My only IT qualification is the result of a two-day course I attended at the request of the benefits office during one of the summer holidays (I only had a part-time contract at the college I was teaching at) so found myself unemployed when the college was closed for holidays. Not recommended for the shorter holidays such as half terms. I wasn't paid any money by the college as I didn't do any teaching and I couldn't claim unemployment benefit as I was still registered as employed and receiving money because I was receiving my week-in-hand. Similarly I lost at least one week's money at Easter and Xmas.

                          Anyway:

The outline of the course was three sessions covering a range of basic IT functions such as documents, spreadsheets and emails, followed by a short online test. Just before the test, the course tutor - for want of a better word - gave everyone in the group a printed handout with all the answers to the test. I managed to pass without reading it, but the tutor still had to fail three of the eleven students as they couldn't pass even with the answers. This may say something about the students, but it says even more about the tutor. (She reported a 100% pass rate to the benefits office after she helped her three failures to complete the test and it's a safe bet she got paid top rate for such excellent results)

Needless to say, I didn't learn massive amounts of useful stuff on the course and 99% of what I do know about IT has been self-taught - the other 1% has come from guys like yourself who have given me hints and tips on occasion - and I don't really have any interest in the subject so haven't taught myself a lot! :smiling: Consequently, the stuff you guys know about IT in your very bones is usually just so much gibberish to me I'm afraid. :disappointed2:
