Interesting stuff there Dave. I've been sceptical about 3D printing as I like sticking bits of plastic together rather than using computers to create scale plans. I guess the folks that like all that 'puter stuff can't resist playin' with it though, so now there's some ready-written CAD stuff about. How long is it going to be before there are online shops specialising in CAD drawings for modellers?

It appears, as usual, I'm waaayyy behind the times. Alas, it's all a bit late for me, but I think you younger guys are going to be having fun! At less than £300, I reckon that's within most people's budget - how many of you have spent that much on an airbrush/compressor set-up?

Oh well, I'd bet my dad would be arguing about how much easier modelling is now with all the improved mouldings, specialised tools and A/M that's available, that he didn't have access to as a lad - and my grandad complaining about all these new-fangled ready moulded plastic kits that's about! What's wrong with balsa wood and tissue paper!!?Comment

Not if the waste resin wash is first UV cured and then filtered to take the cured resin out of the alcohol Dave. The alcohol can then be reused and the filtered cured resin can be disposed of like plastic.Comment

Some of them, anyway. Mainly the ones who can actually work with CAD software, which (as a class) is one of the worst types ever invented as far as usability is concerned.

What, like Thingiverse, MyMiniFactory or Threeding, you mean?

It is, but the real problem is making the drawings. If you can find ones of what you need, then all is well; if you have the skill (and software) to make your own, same. Otherwise, you’re out of luck.Comment

If you follow any of the 3d printing groups on facebook ( only reason I have facebook ( and model making ) you will see that the majority of people know how to dispose of the used cleansing fluids ( water / mean green / ipa ) and are very quick to point that out to new users.
There are a growing number of model makers releasing their stl files, free of charge, for personal use, and I have been collecting some of them, hoping to buy a 3d printer soon.

There are a few good channels on youtube for sensible information on general printing and the best way to get the best use out of the machines.

If I spent all that time making 3-D models, I certainly wouldn't sell the computer files! I'd go into 3D printing for myself. Selling files just invites copying & multiple prints. Selling the individual single parts makes more sense. ( If I was interested in going to business, that is ). In a sense I'm glad I retired from the 3D designing business, it was becoming difficult to keep up to date ( more training = less time actually doing real work! )

Just wondering how many go through that rigmarole rather than just pouring it down the loo?If you follow any of the 3d printing groups on facebook ( only reason I have facebook ( and model making ) you will see that the majority of people know how to dispose of the used cleansing fluids ( water / mean green / ipa ) and are very quick to point that out to new users.

I can see it now….lazy printer takes the waste to the smallest room to dispose of it and thinks he might as well make the journey worthwhile. When he finishes he drops his dog end down the pan before flushing. There is a gentle “woof” noise as the IPA ignites, followed closely by the acrid smell of scorched hair….nurse…..nurse……Comment
