    old smokey mist maker

    Hi all

After having no joy with getting an old smokey, a m8 looked at it, and reckons we could make one, but we are unsure about what mist maker unit it used. Most seem to be 24v ac, but it really needs to run off dc, so more info is needed on this.

If anyone has an old smokey and can shed any light on what it used I would be extremely grateful.

As for what we plan it’s quite simple, and if the mist maker can be sorted anyone can make one of these for themselves.

I want the diesel effect which is more smoke on start off, and less as it goes faster. The plan for this is a larger container to hold the water and mist maker, and a tiny 12dc computer fan. The mist maker will run at full power from being turned on, generating mist in the container. The 12v fan (or 6v will work the same) will be connected to the motor terminals, so when the motor turns the fan turns.

So your boat is sitting still but the container is full of mist just drifting about a bit coming out the pipe. Start up the motor and the fan pushes all the stored mist out the pipe giving that starting up smoke whoosh. As the motor gets quicker the fan will speed up blowing smoke out the pipe so it will look less. Stop the engine and it builds up again, and start it up and big cloud again.

Obviously a bit of trial and error is still needed, but without any info one the mist maker we can’t go anywhere. It would also need an air intake with simple one way valve. We figured like the rubber flappy bits on those face masks you buy for stopping vapour and dust.

Any and all info would be much appreciated

the JJC mist maker is a nebuliser - i think similar to those used in the medical field !- there are another type which are ultrasonic types that are designed for garden ponds that use ceramic type disks that ultrasonically vibrate causing 'water/ mist' to be created...

the ceramic types are usually 24volt - and i am not sure if you can change the outputs of these...?

    maplin sell the ultrasonic types........

      Howdy guys,

Ok, I am not real sure what an "old smokey" is, but from the description in your postings, i am assuming you want something to produce "smoke" from your remote contro boats.

I live in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in the USA, Home to the national Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) and the Pine Bluff Arsenal (Home to 12% of the US stockpile of chemical and bio weapons). At the arsenal, they also produce gas masks for use by the US armed forces. They do all the testing of the masks here also.

Now I am sure you are wondering how this relates to smoke generators, well, while testing the gas masks, they mount several masks on a wall with fixtures which allow a vaccuum to be pulled from behind the wall through the masks. On the "mask side" of the wall, they inject compressed air into a 5 gallon bucket full of a light oil like corn oil. The aeriation of the oil produces "smoke"......so much "smoke" that you cant hardly see three (3) foot in front of you. If sensors in the vaccuum side of the "wall" detect the oil, they know that the gas masks are no good and leak.

Anyway, electric trains that produce "smoke' work on pretty much this same principal.

I have done this at work several times....got a bucket of oil, and stuck an airhose into it lol, people are amazed at how much "smoke" this will produce. Of course this is not "smoke" at all but a fine oil "mist or vapor". But this principal might be downsized using a fish tank "air pump". As for the logistics, that would be up to ya'll, I just thought i would submit this tid bit of info on how to make "smoke".

      have a good day,

      Greg
