Anyone good with cap badges?

Hello all,

There's some very knowledgeable people on this forum, so I wondered if there was anyone might be able to assist with a little mystery I've been trying to solve. My partner's grandfather served in the military during WW2, but never spoke about what he did, and sadly passed away a short while ago. We found an old photo from his service days, and were trying to find a bit of info about where he might have been during the war (we know there was a prisoner of war camp involved, but not much else).

Is anyone familiar with cap badges from back then, who might be able to identify which regiment he was with? It's very blurry, but you never know, it might be obvious to someone!

Hi, to narrow the search down was he attached to British, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Canadian, South African, Rodesian, Polish, Czech, Dutch or French Allied forces?

Sorry, British Army (he was born in England). Should have mentioned!

Not a clue..........and I'm not saying this is it, but after poring over my books and ref. material this is as close as I can come with the general outline shape......1942-44 Cap Badge of the Pioneer Corps.

No worries...someone ought to come up with an answer...I get surprised at how knowledgeable these guys are. There were so many outfits that derived from even villages or batches from provinces in the early years until they were amalgamated I think for easier coordination.

From the photo, purely on the form or the badge it might me the Royal Pioneer corps.

Looks about right. BUT it is only my best guess!

I think the guys may have cracked it. However, another route in would be to look up his service record online. This would tell you which unit h3 was in and allow you to appr this from another angle. Hints and tips are available at the IWM website here...

Guys, that's fantastic, it looks spot on to me (and there I was, unable to shake the fact it looks a bit like the Eiffel Tower :smiling5: ). Looking at their history on Wiki, their deployment does tie in with what we know about his service. And Tim, thank you for that link, I'll certainly look into applying for the service record.

Thanks Laurie, I did have a look through Google hoping it would be one of the more common ones; turns out there's a few more that I initially thought :smiling5:

Unfortunately Pete I don't have his service number. I'll do some digging and see if I can find his date/place of birth, but he was a bit of a distant relative of my partner so it's been tricky finding anything. Thanks for the assistance!
