Adding Motor Suppressors

Hi all

I got a motor suppressor set with little thingy bits, which I have soldered onto the terminals, but a leg from each diode or whatever it is needs soldering onto the motor case, and I just can’t get it hot enough to solder. I have several soldering irons, and even my mega 180w can’t get it hot enough to fix.

Any info on something I migh be doing wrong.

I had the same prob soldering them onto a little mabucci toy type motor. The electronic components in question are actually called "doofers" and I cooked the plastic motor end of my motor in the process of soldering it, ended up with a strange clicking noise!

i suppose you added flux to the motor case too ?- this often helps, sometimes i abrade the motor can first with a file or dremel, this means if the motor can is coated you can solder to the metal below

I have tried several different fluxes, and even the special flux I use for leading car bodies which bonds to steel, but its more a heat issue than a flux one. Its an older motor, and the case is about 1.5mm thick, so just absorbs heat quickly.

I did notice today the end of the case near the bushes is quite big and empty of anything including moving parts, so I drilled a tiny hole, and will rivet a tag onto the case.

Might work ok, I will have to see.
