But the Dukes' last scene in Iwo Jima is classic, as he shakes out a Lucky Strike & the snipers bullet goes through the pack, or at least that's how I remember it. Lee Marvin, a WWII vet, in The Big Red One. Robert Mitchum, another WWII vet, in Anzio & The Longest Day.

Ok, I didn't know "Der Untergang" was "Downfall" in English, with Bruno Ganz. Thanks Lee! It was a wild film.....

Tim, have you seen Castle Keep???

          You can keep them all.

          Saints and Soldiers. Superb film.

Not far behind that classic is Murphy's War.

Not really in to war films but as a Robert Mitchum fan I liked The Hunters about Korean war jet jockeys and also The Enemy Below when he was a destroyer captain trying to kill a U boat.

Singing 'Men of Harlech' in Zulu; may not be historically valid but totally moving nevertheless! There really are some classics out there! (Remember the Khazi of Kabul? A c--p joke but it works for me!) And the Panzerlied ...

A couple of more recent films worth a watch, Hacksaw Ridge and American Sniper. Both based on true stories.

Platoon is the first that comes to my mind, quickly followed by Das Boot (but the miniseries instead of the movie) and Der Untergang.

Others that I can think of just now (I’m terrible at listing things from memory) that I remember as being pretty good were Three Kings, as well as Jarhead.

just dont read the book.........not much like the movie.......he comes across as an arrogant racist a***hole .......lots of things got left out of the movie cos it wouldnt have made it a 'an american hero' film'

Das Boot - the original film version - claustrophobic and frightening - you can smell the diesel fuel, boiled cabbage, bilge water and unwashed bodies!
We Were Soldiers - Uncompromising Vietnam War film - futility of the war & realisation of an unwinnable war - much more understated than 'Apocalypse Now'
The Cruel Sea - A classic I've seen at least 20 times - no heroes here.............................
There are many more films I've enjoyed ( and TV series ), but those 3 are the ones I rate as my favourites

Not quite war films per se but who remembers 'Soldier Blue' with the amazing vocal from Buffy Saint Marie?

Probably at bit "vanilla" for the cognisente but here we go, favourites first...

                              The Eagle Has Landed
                              Kellys Heroes
                              Where Eagles Dare
                              The Battle Of Midway
                              Tora Tora Tora
                              A Bridge Too Far
                              Hannibal Brooks
                              The Great Escape

                              and latterly

                              Saving Private Ryan
                              Fury

edit and Ice Cold In Alex should be somewhere near the top !

Jeez, and The Battle Of Britain, despite some of the aerial stuff....

As a born and bred Londoner I have to listen to my local accent & dialect being murdered every time I turn the telly on.

However, my biggest issue with this, my favourite film, is Donald Pleasence not being bothered to do anything but a British actor accent.

Even Robert Duvall makes a decent fist of it !
