I've just finished reading "Carrier Pilot" by Norman Hanson (ISBN 978-1-909269-59-0) first published in 1979 and republished in 2016. Hanson was a Vought Corsair pilot for the FAA in the Pacific during WWII.
I've read quite a lot of aviation books and this would have to be one of the best reads I've come across. It covers Hanson's time from enlistment, through training at Pensacola in the U.S., and his active service in the Mediterranean and Pacific. It gives the reader a wonderful insight into how difficult and dangerous it was to be a carrier pilot especially when handling the Corsair. So many young pilots died because of a simple lapse in concentration (such as omitting to lock your wings prior to launch or missing a batman's signal).
It's available new from The Book Depository but I see there are several 2nd hand copies available from Abebooks (abebooks.co.uk) from as low as £3.41.
A thoroughly recommended read ...
