    Westland Whirlwind

Does anyone know of a decent (not Airfix) model of the Whirly bomber? I used to live not far from Exeter Airport where they flew from, but could never find a decent model to build.

Classic Airframes did a limted run 1/48 kit a few years ago. You might find one somewhere.

I remember a 1/48 Vac-form kit which came out a while back but I can't remember who did it and Vac-form kits can be a bit of a challenge which might not qualify as "decent"!

I remember someone (Tony?) doing a 1/72 kit not so lond ago.

    Cheers

    Steve

Hi jeff, as steve says classic airframes do a 1/48 kit but its quite rare and expensive. In 1/72 apart from the venerable airfix tooling theres a Pavla kit available in a couple of different boxings . The airfix kit isnt too bad , (it was me who did it ,heres the link to the build http://www.scale-models.co.uk/planes-helicopters/12539-airfix-1-72-westland-whirlwind.html ) its fairly basic but does look every inch a whirlwind, and with a bit of extra detailing makes a nice model. hope this helps , cheers tony

Trouble is , in my bookcase I have The Book of Westland Aircraft, printed during the 2nd World War by the factory and in it are scale drawings of all the Westland built aircrft, including fuselage profiles etc, so I might convince myself to scratch build one, but then again a Westland Pterodactyl would be another choice.......

I've just read your thread about this kit, Tony. I built it some years ago in an effort to get my son interested in the hobby (unsuccessfully!). I remember thinking what a crappy little kit it was at the time. I certainly have had my eyes opened after looking at your photos. What a cracking build! 10 out of 10 for manual dexterity alone!
