    a word of warning.

On saturday i got a phone call from the police saying that they were sorry to tell me that my bank card had been cloned. It happened at an ATM in cambridge.

It was by chance they pulled a car over for speeding at found the facia to an atm in a black bin bag along with redording equipment on the front seat of the car.

not that i had much in my account but that didnt stop them from wiping it out.the police said it was a very convincing facia that would have fooled anyone. i have to go to my bank who say they will get me my money back withing 3-5 days. what i am supposed to do with no money for 3-5 days i dont know but there you go. i also have to give a statement to the police after obtaining the relevant information from my bank.

so this is a word or warning, give every atm a double and tripple check. if anything look dodgy or not how it is usally then tell the bank or police! i wouldnt want anyone else to go through this its a nightmare. i was having a nice weekend around my girlfriend house untill i got that phone call!

be on the look out guys!!!

Sounds a bit odd that one Richard,

How would the Police know your account has been hit..?? Normally the first person to find out is you either through noticing money missing from your account or the bank contacting you to query certain odd transactions as they will normally know your spending habits. The Police only get the info from the bank once this has been discovered and an investigation is commenced, usually you will be the first one to know you have been hit when you discover your money missing.

I would check at the bank first and get a bank statement so you can check for any odd transactions in there. If you are like me, you will know roughly how much you have in the bank at any one given time so any discrepancies should show.

Are you sure this was not a wind up by some of your friends..?? They do this type of thing as one of those prank phone calls now too.

    Regards.....Mark.

apparently they had some kind of card maker thing in the car with a notpad full of account numbers, card number and pin numbers all nicely organised.

no its not prank, my dad thought that so we rang up the police to check the crime no. they gave me. unfortunatly its all legit. i wasnt able to check my account since thursday as i left my wallet at my uncles.

but your right about the bank. i dont kow why it wasnt them who rang me.

i only wish it was a prank mark. its not very pleasant.

      edit:

just to add now having got my card, they did very nicely leave me with 3.56.

i always shield the keypad when inputting my pin number, and i change it frequently- so if any mini camera is trying to watch me inputting digits they are obscured....

hope you get this sorted out and quickly..... with £3.56 left go and have a pint !

I always make the point nowadays of using cash machines inside the bank and not ones on the wall outside. Not quite as convenient for beer money but you only have to think a little bit more ahead and plan. The ones inside are obviously a lot safer as it is considerably more difficult to fit a skimmer inside the bank!

A real problem where I live - Pakistan - and people are not yet really familiar with the ins-and-outs of ATMs...which have only appeared here in the last three years. Folks regularly share their PINs, all get together to watch the magic of the money coming out of the wall and generally treat the whole business as a branch of the entertainment industry. Cloning of ATM points is not yet an issue...but I have little doubt that it will be!
