    Bah! Humbug!

What's all this about 'Happy New Year'!? Not so far it ain't!

I told you guys about me tripping over one of my cats in mid November. The initial diagnosis was a broken left ankle along with two broken bones in my left foot and three fractured toes on my right foot. I went back for the usual check up after two weeks and the new x-rays revealed a further two fractures on my right foot. Still in a lot of pain, I went back to the hospital a couple of days ago - turns out the support boot they gave me for my left foot was causing me to walk lop sided. That in turn somehow stopped the fractures in my right foot from healing. Not to worry though, it's sorted now so on the mend.

    However -

At about the same time I did this, my central heating and hot water packed up. Got the plumber out and he got it running four days later. It ran for nearly one day before it went off again. Two days later the plumber fixed it again - this time for about a day and a half. Three days before Xmas it broke again and I had to wait for nearly a week for another plumber - who promptly condemned my boiler! (He reckoned it was the one they took from the Ark when Noah had finished with it). I'm still waiting for the new one to be installed, but good news, they'll be here on Tuesday.

The day before New Year's, I heard water splashing about in my kitchen. It was heavy rain coming through the extractor fan. Fortunately there was no rain for a couple of days so no more leaks. When the plumber arrived to fix it, it turns out the grill on the outside vent had been put in upside down, so it was guiding the water into the house instead of outside! Only the Gods know why it hadn't let water into the house after all the other rain storms we had last year.

New Year's day I cooked up some potatoes on my electric cooker. Nearly set the house on fire when I went into the lounge to eat my meal. Turned out the switch for the burner was faulty and it didn't turn the burner off so it stayed on and almost set the wooden covers on fire. £35 for a new switch that fortunately my brother-in-law can fix as he's an electrician.

He turned up to find the problem and had to move the cooker from between the cupboard units to gain access to the fixing screws. I thought while the cooker was moved I'd just vacuum the dust bunnies that had accumulated round the sides and back of the cooker. Vacuum cleaner would not work! £65 for a new motor unit which is supposed to arrive today - fingers crossed.

The same evening I got two phone calls. Both supposedly from my bank saying my debit card had been hacked. One call was bogus so I guess it was from the hacker trying to get more details (worrying though that he'd got my card number, account number, sort code and online username. I've not given my user name to ANYONE. The only place and time it's used is when I log on to my account). The other was a genuine recorded message from my bank. New debit card ordered next day.

Anyway, that's why I've not posted much recently. Not won anything on the Lottery either - wonder why?

      Hi Dave
What a catalogue of disasters. By the Law of Averages you MUST be due some good fortune now.

Not the luckiest of people are you Dave?
I sympathise on the heating thing. Our boiler packed up last May, so we had a new one fitted. The system wouldn't refill properly, it was airlocked. Got it circulating after a few days, but some radiators wouldn't heat up. Had those rads changed, again an airlock for a couple of days, when we got it circulating again a radiator valve leaked, ruining the bedroom carpet. Had the rest of the rads changed while the system was drained, ordered new carpet, employed a decorator to make the walls match the new carpet. Decorator was abducted by aliens part-way through the job, disappeared and didn't answer phone calls or emails. Found another decorator who also disappeared without finishing. Eventually got the carpet laid - all the hammering as they fitted new grippers seemed to dislodge something in the heating system, which suddenly started working better than it ever has. Until that is the week before Xmas, when we had no hot water or heating. After two more visits from the heating engineers, we currently have heat in 6 out of 9 rads, and one of the TRVs makes a dreadful rattling noise when it operates so we have to leave it on full. We're expecting another visit on Monday to convert the system from open vented to sealed and pressurised, so I'm expecting the pressure to find all the potential leaks...

Dave, I will not add our new house vicissitudes: they are on the same line of yours and Peter's, but of a lesser magnitude (only because we do not live there, yet...).
Plumbers, electricians, decorators are a worldwide spread spawn with a completely personal view on calendars, quality standards and bills....
Hope your share of bad luck for 2022 has already been depleted.

Wow Dave, what a list of bad luck to happen one after another. Look on the bright side...you could have lost both legs or you could have lost the whole house to flooding or fire. I don't know but I feel these things happen which would have taken the place of something much bigger so perhaps things might look better from now on. Stay safe.

                          Cheers,
                          Richard
