Pretty sure I wouldn't consider anything i have in here as spoilers, but if you haven't seen it and don't want to know anything, don't read on.

Just got back from the movies. Thought the movie itself overall was just okay. The action in the air and special effects were awesome. It really looked like there was just a camera flying around watching good ol' air combat. I really would've liked to have seen about a 30 second uncut shot of nothing but the pilot's view chasing and shooting down a German. That would've been pretty cool. Then cut away after he shoots down the German and starts to get shot at himself. Alas, nothing like that was present.

The dialog was pretty corny and took you out of the movie a couple times, but all in all it was enjoyable. The story they made of the pilots' lives on the ground was a bit predictable with some bad parts in it. Wasn't a big fan of the love story, thought it was a little forced. And the second trip to the officer's club seemed very "after school special" to me. If you brits don't know what that is, those were life lesson movies for kids that were shown after school growing up that tried to teach morals.

Just wanted to post my thoughts on it and see what other people that see it think. Thoughts?

Alas It has not been released in the UK and I'm not sure when it's going to be released sometime this year I guess. From the trailers the film looks very good especially the dog fights. They always seem to throw in a love story maybe that's to keep the ladies happy. I will give it a look when it's released here.

definitely see it for the dogfights. those were the best parts. the bigger the screen the better i say!

It's getting a slating by all the purists on modelling forums but i think if you go with the idea of just being entertained and not a rivet counter then it should be enjoyable to watch.

Actually, thinking of Flyboys - that got a slating from the purists for having all the Germans flying red Fokker Triplanes. I watched an interview with the director basically saying "We knew that was wrong, but we wanted the audience to have clear visual signals about who was who in the air sequences. If both sides had been flying biplanes of slightly different shapes, and the German planes had been all kinds of different colours like in real life, it would have been difficult to follow".

It's the reason X-Wings and TIE-Fighters look completely different, shoot different coloured lasers and so on. Once you know the reasons for a particular inaccuracy, it sometimes makes a bit of sense. And it doesn't affect a layman's basic understanding of WW1 to see an aircraft being used a few months outside its correct historical context...

yea, but flyboys didn't have laughable dialog (in my opinion anyway). you'll know exactly what i mean if/when you see it. i went with my wife's cousin who's an air force pilot, and he laughed at at least 3 lines that bomber pilots delivered.

if you don't go in with high expectations you'll be fine. just go for the planes.
