    Future floor wax

    Hi

I've heard lots of people talk about using Johnsons Future floor wax on models and canopy's to create a gloss finish before applying decals etc.

    My questions are:

    1. Can it be sprayed through my airbrush or does it need to be thinned?

    2. What do you use to thin it?

    3. What do you use to clean my airbrush afterwards

    4. Would applying microsol/set effect anything afterwards

    5. And finally......what about acrylic/enamel varnish's on top, any problems?

    Thanks

    Tim.

I tried spraying it and it was hopeless, best results are achieved through application by brush. It is self leveling so doesn't need to be sprayed. (in my humble opinion)

It's ok to use acrylic or enamel over the top as long as it's dry first. As Johnsons is actually Acrylic you shouldn't have any problems with either of those paints.

The stuff is fine for use with microsol/microset. There's a lot of modellers out there who use Johnsons in particular as a glosscoat over a matt surface prior to applying decals.

I've even heard rumours that the popular modellers product Johnsons Future can even be used as a "Floor Wax" although few have ever tried using it for that!

Been using it for three years. No probs so far. don't have an airbrush so cannot comment on that aspect, but can say it has no negative reaction with Microsol or Set. I will sometimes use it as a 'finish' coat mixed with Tamiya X21 base cote (but you only need a couple of drops) and a drop of sepia ink, brushed on in very thin coats. Brings up the panel lines quite nicely.

        Hi

Thanks for the replies, I tried it both with brush and airbrush and both were ok, it has darkened the colour of the model, does anyone else find this happens or did I apply too much? should I lighten the colour prior to application?

WHen adding the varnish it does darken the paint. It's normal.

Welcome to the forum hope you enjoy your stay here.

The important thing to remember with Future/Johnsons Kleer, is that coating matt finishes the liquid soaks right through the finish, subsequent coats can be used to advantage to build up the gloss factor if required,it does take away that 'painted model finish' and knits together everything including the decals, also important to remember that in general most matt model paints are in fact too matt, this is where Future comes into its own by slowly adjusting the mattness.

Apparently that link doeszn't work. Try just the swannysmodel.com bit and go in to tricks and tips. It's an excellent article. If that doesn't work let me know and I'll see if I can e-mail the article for anyone that wants it.
