 Dear Chris and Jen,
I'm really sorry for your painful loss.
Even if we know perfectly that their life will be almost certainly shorter than our, when the time of their departure comes there's no way of rationalizing: it's a part of our life and our family we are losing and it's really bad.
We still have to recover from the loss of our neighbour's cat almost 3 years ago... (technically he was their cat but he chose us as his humans...) so I can fully understand why you think you are not going to have another cat.
My wife and me decided we will enjoy the company of every possible stray cat who will choose to muck about with us, but we'll try not to get too involved. On the other hand, I'm also pretty sure we'll fail to stick to that promise when facing another pretty whiskered and meowing ball of fur.
A warm hug to both of you.
