    Where DO dropped pieces go?!!

“ You cannae change the laws of physics “ so Mr Scott was often misquoted as saying , however a recent episode at the bench had me questioning this very thing , not to mention my own sanity!
While test fitting the pilot in the rear cockpit of the Lublin I dropped him . He fell at my feet onto a piece of vinyl offcut that I put under the bench to make finding dropped things easier ( so I thought) .
Upon pushing my chair back and looking down I found he had vanished . Now this is a 1/48 pilot , not a tiny thing , but it was nowhere to be found . 15 minutes on my hands and knees and looking all around and I thought I was going insane , he cant just disappear , or is there a space time wormhole under my bench?! This just cant be happening I thought , maybe its a glitch in the Matrix . After another 10 mins looking he was found , much to my relief .
When the little bugger fell he must have hit the ground running and decided to have a game of hide and seek - he had nestled himself into the dark corner of the steel angle supporting leg a good two foot away from where he fell . Needless to say he got a good telling off for going AWOL ( well more like “ you little b@#**rd !”)
Just goes to show the normal laws of physics dont apply to the underneath of modelling benches Click image for larger version

I've been searching, intermittently, for nearly a fortnight, for a grab rail for a SdKfz 7 half-track that dropped in front of me from the bench! It's the wrong shape to bounce, there are no holes, carpets, or containers for it to find refuge in but it still hasn't re-appeared. I know it will eventually which is why I haven't scratched a new one! However, I'm beginning to believe the Carpet Monster is real and a product of Beelzebub .... :worried:

Nothing to do with physics, Tony. These sort of mysteries are always down to the Carpet Monster. The explanation is simple. He saw the pilot fall. Rushed out and grabbed it and then hid it in the steel angle of the bench leg. While you were looking, swearing and becoming more and more frustrated, he was sat somewhere watching and chuckling to himself.

Can't remember which forum it was on but a member dropped a piece, complete with CA, and couldn't find it.
Petting the dog later and what was stuck to the animals fur?

I once misplaced the nozzle cap/cover that is taken off an AB so I could do some fine lines.... Could I find it anywhere??? 20 minutes later I had given up and was resigned to having to buy a new one......I then put my hands on the front pockets of my hoody..... And there it was!

I do keep a powerful torch on my bench - sweeping that systematically across the floor helps focus the search, and held at a low angle it casts long shadows from anything trying to hide in plain sight. But I still lose stuff, sometimes for weeks at a stretch.

If it gets really bad I call in the missus, who usually spots the errant piece instantly, and gets the reward of slagging me off for having done a 'man-look'. The humiliation is worth it.

Carpet monsters are the offspring of those kleptomaniac aliens that live in the Bermuda Triangle.

A day or so ago I dropped a very small, but basic bit of plastic, about 3mm. I searched for it for ages. No luck, so I scratched one.

Today, I dropped a second bit, so on my knees I goes. I couldn't find this new 'dropping', but guess what? I found the one I lost earlier this week!

Told you! The aliens had inspected your first piece and rejected it.

The close cousin of the Carpet Monster the Vinyl Monster is to be found at Race Towers .
A crafty beast that can lie in wait for hrs and days , rather like a spider . The sight of a part landing results in a rush to capture it and spirit it way . There have been times when items are never seen again, recently a left arm fired from the bench by the tweezer gun disappeared completely , despite several searches, one even involving Mrs Race it has failed to materialize.I think she thought It was just a ploy to get her on the floor !
