Ours were ten gallon churns, much taller and no handles on the lids. Two man lift as well.
The only real change from the turn of the nineteenth century in the UK was a change from galvanised metal to aluminium, and later the addition of a plastic churn liner rather than just putting the milk straight into the churn. They were still using them when I worked as a dairy hand for a year or so in the early nineteen eighties. Best way to move them was to lean them over and roll them on edge by turning the lid. When you got good you could move them at walking pace with no real effort at all.Comment

Exactly the same Chris, with one real difference. If you drop a churn you can get very wet, but if you drop a gas cylinder you can create a torpedo if the valve is knocked off……happened in a lab at my establishment. The cylinder went through three walls before it stopped…..Comment

Fahrbare Panzerlafette … can’t say I’ve heard of that one before. The name literally just means, loosely, “mobile armoured gun mount” (interestingly, both books in the photo misspell lafette as laffete …). It reminds me more of this than of R2-D2, though:

Is there an aftermarket set with just a pair of legs sticking out of his mouth? If you ever go to London, visit the Natural History museum and see their animatronic one. It is superb, and more than a little intimidating! Even though it’s not real, you can sense the beast sizing you up for lunch. Quite disconcerting :surprised:Comment

Saw that happen with an acetylene bottle in Hull docks - fell from about 20ft & snapped the valve clean off- it charged around throwing showers of sparks off railway lines etc. - never seen wharfies run so fast! It eventually ran into a concrete loading ramp, but couldn't budge that! No explosion! We were on the boat deck of our ship - safe about 30ft above all the dockside action. The bottle was being delivered to us & slipped though the cargo net! Nothing to do with us - In Hull at that time ALL loading/unloading, even of ship' stores, had to be done by the Dock wharfies.........................

CO2 cylinders do similar if you don't hang onto them if you're putting a freezing charge into them prior to filling. (Fitted to life saving equipment -Life jackets, inflatable life rafts etc.) It's change of underwear time seeing a bottle disappear through numerous walls!!!!Comment
