I would be interested to see how you get on with the rock moulds.

I'll let you know. The combination of the moulds and foam clay intrigues me. I think you can freeze them once the clay has cured, so the rocks come out without tearing, even the undercuts coming out cleanly - we shall see. I'm also interested to see just how flexible the cured foam is - I just feel that it should make it a bit easier to ensure a good fit to the underlying structure.

One gripe is the sheer number of different rock moulds Woodland Scenics offers, without any clear guide to sizes and application of the resultant rocks. I just chose two moulds that offered obviously different sizes/shapes, so I'm hoping for the best.

I've just looked this up. You put the foam clay in the mould and freeze it straight away. Once frozen it can be removed from the mould without damage, then left to air dry afterwards. Important to remove it while uncured and frozen, to ensure the best result.

Just in from 4D Model Shop - for my first-ever diorama!

Four sheets of Styrofoam, a bag of Sculptamold, two flexible mixing bowls (for mixing batches of Sculptamold), a couple of packs of tongue depressors (to stir and apply it), two Woodland Scenics rock moulds, some craft foam clay (to go in the moulds), a knife (for cutting the Styrofoam) and Gorilla Glue (to ensure I can still cut the Styrofoam when I've stuck it together).

The Woodlands Scenics rock moulding kits are excellent. Follow the instructions precisely and you’ll get great results. I used them to make a rock face for my model railway many years ago.

Just saw your later post. Once out of the moulds the rock forms should be attached to plaster impregnated bandage. You’ll find detailed instructions on the Woodlands Scenics website or tutorials on YouTube.
