That's what the Nazis did with the original Volkswagen, except you made weekly payments, minimum 5 Reichsmarks, up to a certain threshold. Not one 'Beetle' was delivered to a customer, though the German Labour Front (DAF) took 275 million Reichsmarks in down payments. Some customers waited until the 1960s for some compensation.

    Just sayin'

For me it would be about 200 quid. I'd rather spend less, I don't believe I've ever reached that threshold, though I may have peaked at something a bit over 100 quid.

Each to their own! If you can afford 1000-1500 quid for a model then go for it. It's just too dear for me.

No matter your spending pattern I think you'd need to be like Pete Waterman and other well known people to warrant spending that sort of money. If you have the room as well , why not.

Wasn't there a similar scheme in cold war East Germany for prospective purchasers of the Trabant?

I think the most I've ever paid for a kit was under £20, and I can't see myself breaking that limit... but you never know!

Stock, Aitkin, and Waterman not ring a bell then…..one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of all time! Not saying the best, before everyone starts kicking off…..just the most successful…..
Pete Waterman spent his money on railway companies, heritage engines, and model railway manufacturing, by the way…..look up “Just like the real thing models”. They were the railway modelling equivalent of Wingnut wings……and more or less went the same way….

Karl , Pete Waterman used to be a record producer, now has interests in model railways, along with Rod Stewart and Jools Holland . They all have superb model railway layouts . When some idiots destroyed a model layout at a venue in Stamford ,Rod Stewart was one of many who contributed to the club .

Thanks Tim, these youngsters are sadly lacking knowledge about such things :smiling2:

Waterman actually owned a real railway company, modern and heritage maintenance companies and at least six preserved (what are now known as “heritage”) engines. His model railway is called leamington spa. Here you go…..

It's a very subjective question and the answer will vary for us all. All I can say is if you have the money, really want it, and think it justifies the expense, go for it. I've rarely regretted spending money, but have regretted not, if that majes sense. To be honest it is an eye watering price. I've literally bought real cars for less (pieces of **** mind you).
As for buying models, fortunately I've not had to purchase many, inheriting a large stash when my dad passed. I think the most I've spent so far is about £20. That said I've spent hundreds on paint, tools and so on. Most recently just under £200 on an airbrush. As they say - you can't take it with you!
If you do splash out for it, I'll certainly take a seat to watch the build

When I retired I treated myself to a £400 model as a retirement gift.
                                My money, my choice.
It wasn't huge but incredibly well made.

Now £1,500 is, in my view, too much.

But the real put off is its size.

Where would you put that unless you had something prepared?

Horses for courses though and I certainly wouldn't criticise anyone that bought one, fair play to them.

                                Del.
