For me it's not losing people I know, though there have been one or two, it's the passing of people whose music I grew up listening to, some of whom triggered a lifelong interest in music and ultimately a career. They are becoming too many to list, and they are not that much older than me!

Also, I'm sure my back never used to ache as frequently as it does these days

That is scary isn't it! I have a godson with a full career behind him, (22 years) who joined the mob at my encouragement some six years after my retirement (1989) - fascinating to see the change in equipment though!

Musicians tend to die young due to the hedonistic lifestyle that most of them lead. I am constantly amazed that Keith Richards keeps going.

              That's not really true.
Most musicians are hard working people doing a job in which actually playing the music is a small part. Most of them are not making the money, nor leading the lives, that many think they are.

Have never known any musicians who didn't have at least part time 'day jobs' that kept them semi-sober.
Age, me, remember what-his-name who played the thing at that place by that gas station with the dino logo back when we lived on the bird's name street? Wife, sure, can see his face, that funky guitar like thing he laid on his knees, no bird, Delavan Ave., don't remember his name, sharp dresser.

Most musicians are one gig away from unemployment, and I mean accomplished professionals. At the end of a George Michael tour ('Cover to Cover'? Not sure) I asked the guitar player what he was doing next, it's the sort of pleasantry exchanged at the end of any tour. He had no idea.
