It was a splendid sunny morning and a sudden desire to empty sheds 1 & 3 ( actually storage hangars A & C ) took hold, well the chance of any rain looked slim ?,when you have a fleet of models to line up the weather takes consideraable consideration as taking refuge quickly can present its problems,so how did it go ? well for starters there was more to clear out than I had first imagined, years of wings, tails, broken bits with the 'it could come in handy one day for another model' syndrome in the back of my mind I started to make my way in,firstly a few dead mice had to be conveyed to the dustbin having eaten a lethal mix of Rentokils best bait for their tea ! interesting the skeleton of a mouse, fascinating rib cage for such a small creature, out came my fully rigged Flair Puppeteer and off with the wings for winter storage, next a cache of glider wings were removed some of the fuselages long since dead and gone, but nothing yet for binning which was the main exercise to make space for the good ones, the first to go was the mangled wreck of my old Gyrace which had been kept for spares, spares for what I asked myself ? you could hardly graft an oily tail onto a nice new fuselarge,no it had to go,next was a pair of wings for a long dead Gipsy Moth which had more centre section repairs than a Concordes tail section, anyway they weighed a ton in paint and epoxy, sling them ! another couple of wing sets which due to being badly stored had more warps in them, they could never possibly be properly recovered so the pile was now mounting up..after two hours I had rejected 50 wings alone to the trash trailer ready for the tip, along with twelve fuselages of long since gones and a goodly supply of old dope bottles which had rusted lids and could not be shifted, some of the models had survived two previous house moves and some I had forgotton about anyway, any useful fittings such as horns, linkages etc were duely removed as model salvage, this took a bit of time but it did give a few moments to digress, have a cuppa and consider how much time had been spent on some of these models, running into thousands of hours, still it was better spent than chasing the blonde next door, well that is what I tell the wife to add street-cred to my modelling !
After a further few hours the skies started to darken and then the heavens really let loose, thankfully anything valuable was in the sheds by this time but the wind got up and lifted a pile of wings into the air as if to say give us just one more chance to spread our wings,a very wet wonwing retreated into the house to get changed, the task of the day had been achieved,to save a bit of space for the good uns and clear out the junk,I can really recommend it as very theraputic, give it a try sometime but you have to be fairly brutal, past attempts have been far too feeble as witnessed bits of models that were well past their sell by dates and I can now actually get at my airworthy models to work on and fly them as modellers we have a built in magpie instinct,is this ringing any bells ? !
Nice to share my day with you,the wings will make one very final flight, over the rail at the local tip,you never know I could see a set grafted to a dustcart in the future ! :woohoo: and its time for a :beer2: after that little lot !
