Why do they get so deep into our hearts?

It hurts so much because we care so much Karl, they are family to any loving owner.
I’m sure he had a wonderful life with you and is at peace now. No consolation at the moment as it is going to be raw but that knowledge will be eventually.
So sorry for your loss :sad-face:

My heart goes out to you. Over the years we have had to make the ultimate decision with a few dogs. I cry for days. When we welcome a puppy or a kitten into our families we make them the promise that we will do the right thing for them when the time comes. To not do so is the cowardly, selfish way out.
Thoughts are with you.Comment

I do agree Karl, it's a real wrench..
..
I'm certainly not a cat person, dogs all the way for me...
.. but I can sympathise mate, when my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, "Mort" passed,4 years ago I was devastated (.. still think of him very often tbh) .
They DO become a massive part of your life, and can take a LONG while to get over.
All the best mate,

Really sorry for your loss Karl. I have had to do that to two feline buddies in the last couple of years, one on Xmas day two years ago and one on Mother’s Day last year. It was a very raw experience in both cases, made worse by the dates, and I still think of them very often. They were both rescues and had a long and happy life with us.
I always think that the final trip to the vets is the last good thing you can do for them. It’s very hard for you, but you make it easier for them by being there and holding and talking to them to the end.
We have another rescue girl now, sat on the settee next to me as I type…..and she has quickly become as important as the old ones were. She isn’t a replacement, just another chapter in the book. My advice is that when the grief isn’t so intense, find another rescue to adopt. There are plenty of them needing your help.Comment

I did that with our first cat twenty odd years ago and have regretted it ever since. I will never fail to be there again. Trust me, the pain is far worse.Comment

Sorry to hear this Karl, fur babies are our lives, we dote on them, we tell them our secrets and they're always loyal.
We had the vets come to our house and do the necessary deed, heartbreaking to say the least, saying goodbye to our dog after 13 1/5 years with her... it's been 3 years and that still hurts :loudly-crying:Comment

Karl I know this is a hard time for you yes sometimes it’s more upsetting when a pet passes away than people. Having a farm for my years having Cattle,Goats and Chickens you get attached to them easy and it hurts when you have to put them down especially when you have to not a veterinarian when they get sick but in your heart you know the suffering they have is gone. When I found my last Jersey Cow dead in the barn lot from old age the pain I had was so bad I had her about 15 years she was about a year old when I bought her and I knew the time was soon but I wasn’t prepared. I have the spot marked in the barn lot where I found her I think about her now and then when I see that spot in the barn lot it’s still painful and that’s been 13 years ago this July. Your in my prayers for your grief.Comment
