CA glues .

Having recently pmd Paul and had Jim reply to my post on problems with trying to CA straps to weapons.
Had a problem with Tamiya tape, I stick it to itself, cut to width then CA it on to the weapon and paint. So decided to try aluminium foil, the same thing happened, just didn't want to stick .
Before I have used a Everbuild product from Toolstation, that worked on the tape.
Having bought some Loctite thought I'd try it. Failure on the tape and the foil .
What do other swear by ? Hopefully some one will have attempted and succeeded in getting straps to stay on .

I’ve found gel loctite is as reliable as any, but to be honest I’ve always struggled a little with the reliability of CA. Even when you get it to stick its shear strength is pretty low. Devcon 5 minute epoxy might give you a better bond on very small areas like that John? Takes a bit of planning to minimise waste though, and you have to hold the parts together while the glue goes off. I‘d use blue tack for that.

The trouble is, some folks stick things like straps etc. together, then have a good pull at it to see if it's stuck. Why?

In my book, as long as it's strong enough to paint, it's stuck. But then I'm just a simple kind of chap who likes things easy.... :upside:

Lidl's own brand superglues ( pattex ) works for most things I tried in the past.
i have also used clear humbrol enamel varnish, kristal klear , sprue/glue goop mixture.
I usually find its the plastic that is the weaker hold, not the thing I am trying to attach.

Have you considered double sided tape? I used it in 1/24 scale cars for securing ribbon (seatbelts). Don't see why it wouldn't work for straps.

Something to consider with all brands of CA glue is that it has a limited shelf life, particularly once opened.

You can extend that by keeping it in the fridge, assuming you can get that past the relevant authority.

Don't buy big bottles/tubes of CA glue, as sold by some hobby suppliers. Instead, buy small ones and try to use it as fresh as you can. I only ever buy 3g tubes of both 'liquid' and 'gel' types and regularly chuck more than half full tubes away as they have become seriously degraded after just a few weeks. It will still stick my fingers together but not small parts to models, at least not properly.

There are things that CA glues won't stick, including several plastics like polypropylene, 'Teflon', 'Delrin' and some high density polyethylenes.

I've always stuck things like Tamiya tape with a PVA/white glue.

Wobble, don't use Tammy tape for straps as CA doesn't get a good grip on its surface. Also paint one part with an accelerator and dab the other with CA. It should bond immediately. Use thick foil as it will hold its shape. I would normally stick the weapon onto the figure or surface before sticking on the strap prepainted and touch up the glued area after.

That's a good idea, would only need a dap , as you say a bit of planning required .

Why didn't I think of that, course will try as have both sorts in stock .:surprised:. Strength test required that's why it's done.

Hi and thanks , I've actually stuck some tape to the butt of a machine gun, using a thick PVA. so far it's held .
The interesting thing with the CA it was a brand new tube.

I've got 5 figures complete with weapons fitted. I wanted to put on the back a rifle or machine gun on the three holding a Panserfaust . Going to have to paint those three first then remove some paint to allow the fitting of the weapons .
