The painting (mirrored camouflage) and markings (upper-wing roundels in four colours) also give away that it’s not a picture from 1944. I gather those roundels were only used from 1937–39.Comment

Exactly! Early years roundels, two bladed props, early cam scheme, distinctive shape - ooh, somebody had a brain fart! (Beautiful calligraphy though!) And the ID skills of the IWM also leave much to be desired.

You need to speak to the Imperial War Museum whose online media team uploaded a video titled ''spitfires'' which contained only Hurricanes.

You can imagine the thought process.
It's got wings - it's a plane!
It's a Black and white pic. - Gotta be Second World War!
Roundels and camo - Oh it's gonna be a spitfire!!
Job done, back to the Love Island website!!!Comment

Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito, Lancaster... What's the difference? Just the number of Merlins flying in formation...
Of course, to every Luftwaffe pilot in the battle of Britain, every British fighter (especially the one's that shot them down) WAS a SpitfireComment
