That thing is amazing, it almost takes off in it's own length! And as for landing, I've seen nissan micras having trouble parking in a space that short!
Yes very real,they are highly modified STOL machines from stock airframes,the one that taxies past is a Davis Special converted from a Husky light aircraft,the wings have special high lift sections,slots and look at those doughnut tyres ! there is another sequence where they land onto a river bed with rocks etc,the tyres are called Tundra's.
That looks like a special contest for this type of aircraft,they run up on the brakes,lift the tail and let loose,the danger is striking the prop on the runway !

Yes a practical use,in Alaska where these images originated they need to land on very rough areas and in small places,the high lift devices take care of flight,and those doughnuts take care of the landings !
