New compressor needed ( and very nearly new shed !!!)

Hi all finally got in the shed yesterday , been weeks since I got anything done so I really enjoyed doing a bit . Got a coat of primer on the Yak and a base of white where the red bits are going . About 4 o clock went back in the house for a bit of tea , intending to go out and finish off after.
Upon returning to the shed after about half an hour , I heard a strange sizzling sound as I approached the door . When I opened it the entire shed was full of thick brown acrid smoke , and it was pouring out of the motor on top of the compressor! I quickly ran in and unplugged it , choking as I did so. The door was wedged open and it took about an hour for the smoke to clear.
I had been using the compressor earlier and it was starting, filling and shutting off fine , it must have been an electrical short or something , anyway its a stroke of luck I went back at that moment , a minute or two more and it would have been in flames .
Even though I only went in for five seconds to unplug it every bit of clothing I had on reeked of smoke , even my hair .
Naturally everything in there will stink now too , ive yet to go in today , and the comp will be going out for the scrap man .
So a new compressor is on my xmas list , and my new years resolution is to turn everything off when im not in there !

Frightening experience but it could have been worse. I hope the smell of smoke doesn't linger too long. At least you'll get a new compressor from Santa.

          A very lucky escape.
Maybe Santa might also include a smoke detector with a replacement compressor!!!!

Oh wow, a very lucky escape!

I've always been a bit paranoid about leaving things switched on in the shed. This hasn't helped lol, but it's a good reminder.

Agree. I have a few smoke detectors lying around as the bungalow we moved into has the ones that are hard wired, (and don't go off when I burn the toast). One of the portable spares has now been relocated to the garage/workshop/bench/storage space!!!! After you guys mentioned cold weather paint storage it was actually very convenient!!!!

So that's two things sorted today just by reading a few posts. Who said it ain't worth the fee for being on here????

It seems that all those years spent by SWMBO taming training my behaviours have finally found a reason in your unlucky accident, Tony; now I'm almost obsessed by the need of switching/plugging off everything in my hobby room, and often not only there, before leaving, and I wasn't a "switch it off" manic some many years ago. :upside:

Glad everything went (almost) well and nobody got hurt.

I don't have a certificate but I am informed by SWMBO I am a trained person with regards to switching items on/off. Evidently it's everything else I am still lacking!!

Good that nothing more serious happened to both you or the shed!

Wonder how many have a fire extinguisher in the shed or hobby room?
