5 to 6 months until bedridden -- maybe!?

I've been given a general classification of 5 to 6 months until I'm bedridden; this is an estimate by the Hospice medical team, but nothing can be predicted exactly, and some folks have been in this status for a couple years. I had a visit from the on-call nurse-practitioner, the result of strange flu-like symptoms occuring once a week every Friday; she checked for edema, and blood-pressure, and though I have had a triple bypass about 15 to 20 years back, my heart is pretty strong, and thank goodness!

The illness has not given as much trouble as the treatment that was foisted off on us unsuspecting disabled folk. It's called Lupron, and suppresses the male hormone. Google Lupron and you'll see what nasty side effects 60% of patients experience-- and just my luck to fall in the 60%.

Lots of sweating and hot flashes, night sweats, in other words, one has the experience of a menopausal woman! Learning how to deal with this has taken months, and if my heart wasn't strong, I probably would have died from exaustion or another heart attack from the sleeplessness. 1-1/2 to 2 hours sleep before waking up soaking wet, that's what I went through for months, until we found some clothing (Polartec) that wicks moisture away from the skin like crazy, along with wool sweaters over that as my illness also makes me cold.

Worst thing is, we are just starting to get this under control, and it has made it difficult to impossible to get much done on the models. I hope our results in the weeks to come are good, as I want to get going on my projects. I may have too many, and if I do go down this year (I'm trying my best now for staying up and around for a year or two), I'm going to ask my support team to get up an "angel team" to help me finish the models.

My driver-caretaker for my docent work on the U.S.S. Pampanito gave me the Guillows PBY-5/5A, and it arrived just yesterday, and I'm looking forward to being able to work on it. It's a gorgeous kit, and made in U.S.A. (only the box is made in China!), to which I say, hooray!! If I were British, it would be like getting a fine model kit made in England instead of China.

According to your individual philosophies, I would appreciate your prayers, meditations, or good vibes.

    Regards, John

I think this is one of those things that you don't really comprehend unless you have actually experienced something similar in your own circle of friends and aquaintances. I haven't. I can only hope that modelling will be able to help you through such a challenge and continue to give you the satisfaction and enjoyment that we all take for granted.

I'm sure all our thoughts and prayers are with you as you deal with this particularly difficult time.

Good morning John & hope that a least today is good for you & as many as can be in the future. The nice thing I have found about this forum is the respect people have for the other which makes it easy, perhaps easier, to talk about the difficulties in life.

I cannot begin to wonder, putting myself into your position, how I would think & react. As I get older I just say thank you for every day as none of us know what is round the corner. I do hope you are able to make maximum use, even if bedridden, of your faculties. I wish you well & also to keep us all updated on how you are. I survived a near fatal accident some 12 years ago & it is human contact which is so important & so much better than counseling.

Wow I like the Catalina PBY and an all wood construction. I have said before that I find this the most beautiful aircraft I have seen. I had to film a conference which included the Jersey B of B day display & they had an all white PBY. Filmed it in the air & on the ground at our airport. Also saw with great interest the PBY's in Tora Tora which I watched a couple of nights ago (for the nmpteenth time).

Finishing a Wellington at present decided at the weekend that my next build my PBY which has been waiting 6 months. All plastic 1/48 so not quite as impressive as yours. Have been putting it off until my skills improved.

Keep in touch John including photos of your progress on the PBY as that looks a real special model. Looks like almost building the real thing in miniature.

                      Best wishes.

                      Laurie

Hi John, sorry to hear about your prognosis and hope you manage to keep going. I work as a professional carer in a nursing home and have cared for cancer suffers for many years. If any advice was needed it's continue your normal life as long as possible and let the professionals who are there advise you and do what they need to do, because they do know what they are doing - "mostly" - every person presents diferently.

My thoughts go to you, also to your family and friends, the best support system anyone could ever have.

Best wishes for the future :heartforyou:and lets hope all the cancer research pays off.:goodluck:

                        Tony.

                              Hi John

My father was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer in 1998 and not long after (suffered three heart attacks)) all within a few hours of each other), He is the oldest of his family, all the rest past on in their early 60's, I am glad to say that he is still alive and kicking. He'll be 80 this year.

There are times when prayer's can be asked and are often answered, by something or someone unknown, and although I am a bit of a sceptic regarding a God or "Supreme being" who looks on at us and answers our prayers, I am a firm believer in the power of the human spirit in overcoming whatever obstacles life can (and generally does) throw at us.

My best thoughts and wishes accompany you on your journey

                              Ian
