The Tamiya 32nd planes are around £100.00, as is the Airfix Mossie so I guess £65.00 is looking more acceptable nowadays.

I guess a large multi-media model could justify the money and, at the end of the day, how much money does it save you by not going out for all those hours!

I come from the days of 2/6 for an Airfix series one in a bag though so I share your concern!!

Likewise. The 72nd Airfix kits with the clear plastic bag and instructions in the cardboard fold. Not to mention the two-piece clear plastic stand to mount it on.

Modern multi media kits don't really resemble those little kits that I massacred as a nipper. It's a quesion of how much a kit is worth to you and how much you are prepared to pay for it. I've bought a few kits that have set me back around £100 and they have all been worth it. Hopefully the one yet to be built will be too.

          Cheers

From what I've seen a lot of Tamiya's Models are a bit on the pricey side, but I suppose you get what you pay for. I have spent a few pounds (quite regularly actually) on models, but unless I win the Lottery, I cant justify spending the £100 or so on the Tamiya Spitfire or Mustang. I do have to eat after all.

I have spent £50 or £60 on models, however I am getting 4 or 5 models, rather than 1.

I would love to get the Tamiya Aston Martin DBS, I've seen it priced around £35, but again I would rather spend £35 on perhaps 2 or 3 rather than 1.

I've just come back to modelling after 35yrs, and I have been a bit surprised by the price of some kits. I'm only doing 1/72, just for the practice, and I'm spending between 5 and 7 quid a go. I did buy a half-price Dragon Tiger for a tenner, and I can see from the quality of the kit that it would be worth more than a Revell or Airfix version. I would hope and expect a £65 kit to be of the same, high quality.

I haven't built the Dragon Tiger yet, I don't want to make a b8lls up of it.

I remember some of those Airfix/Matchbox/Revell models only costing 50p - 99p a shot. Now look what they are asking for those very same kits only with different box art

I thought coming back to the hobby would of been good for therapy me and it has been, I've only built the two cars at the moment and that is only because I managed to find them cheap on flea-bay, but, it would be impossible for me to even look at buying a kit new at today's prices, so all I'm now able to do is to keep popping in here to look at what builds are going on, but to still be able to learn what tricks are being done...

God, those were the days! Saving up pocket money & doing odd jobs to get 50p to buy a Matchbox kit from my local shop!

But I definitely think many of the dearer kits from the likes of Dragon are worth the extra money. The detail & PE make them a joy to build.

I used to get 2/6 pocket money every week and buy materials, tools and paints with birthday and Christmas money. I would buy a series one bagged kit every Saturday morning from a local shop that I eventually worked in as a teenager. Kid in a candy shop springs to mind.

One day I went for my kit and they had gone up to 2/7!! I was gutted. My Dad gave me an extra penny that week though and he put my pocket money up after that! Aren't Dads wonderfull?

Just out of curiosity, did anyone buy Frog kits? I was wondering how much they cost back then.

They couldn't have been that expensive as i remember i bought a few (pre 1970 this is) model cars like the little austin. i got 2 shillings pocket money (heh heh 10p) if i helped with housework and i could afford one out of that if i remember correctly.

Another thing i think i remember right, is they sometimes came with little tokens inside that you saved up and swapped for a free model. ... or am i mixing model makers up here?
