      What’s disappeared: winters.

In the 1980s, when I was in school, every December through February or so we had several weeks of snow on the ground, most smaller water courses etc. froze over thickly enough to allow skating on them, etc. In the last twenty years or so, there have been a good number of years in which I haven’t even taken my winter coat off the coatrack, and in the ones I did need it, I don’t think it was for more than a week or two. A few days on which it snows every year, and week of snow on the ground every couple of years is about as bad as it gets nowadays.

Last January and February we had about three weeks of lying snow and really cold temperatures here Chris. I remember it well because we had the builders in and the electric was off during the day and they were working with the windows open. I damn near froze to death!

Yep, last year we had power cuts as well. Not had one yet this year, but we did lose broadband for a week, which also knocks out our phones now.

I'm sad Chris, because you should have been hugging Jen instead of a hot water bottle...More fun too!!!

Jakko is right as there is a lack of snow for whatever reason. As a kid in upstate New York, we had lots of snow in the winter. Sleigh riding was a daily thing. When I was older, snow mobiling was even more fun. When out driving around, you always had a pint of Thunderbird wine in your snow suit pocket in case you got cold. Two swigs of it and you warmed up ASAP...

What ever happened to 'Passion Pits', or drive in theaters as they were known? Back in the day, they had dollar nights where it was $1 per person entry. I had a '62 Ford Econoline panel van with no windows. Me and my girl in front and 4 others laying flat in the back with a carpet over them. 4$ savings and used for popcorn. Yeah, we were cheap kids back when...

I would have been a bit younger when I got one, maybe 10-12. That same uncle once gave me a pack of panatella cigars for Xmas when I was a similar age. I never worked out if that was a mistake or whether he had no idea how old I was, but either way, he wasn't exactly on the ball :smiling3:

What would ten bob in the late sixties be worth today? I don't know, but it has to be at least fifty quid, probably more!

Cheesecloth blouses on young women who didn't require a bra.
Obviously these young ladies were my age at the time and I'm not sure they would be a great idea on ladies my age today, but they were definitely fun at the time.

I’m probably one of the few non-British people who knows that a “bob” is a shilling, and there were twenty shillings to a pound, so that note would have been equivalent to 50 new pence. The Bank of England has an inflation calculator, and though that doesn’t do fractional pounds, it’s just a matter of typing in 5 and dividing the outcome by 10:

So that means ten shillings in 1969 would be about £6.96 today. Had you been given the note in 1965, BTW, it would be about £8.10.

I am still having my central heating on virtually all day and night due to my RA and other issues. As if that isn't enough, we have snow forecast for tomorrow! So much for Spring. Mind you, Aileen's nephew has a birthday in March and it snows every year on his birthday without fail.
