Compresser advise

Hi all , i want to buy a compresser to use with my airbrush . Do i have to get one dedicated for use with an air brush or can i get a general purpose one . I am a carpenter so it would suit me to get one that could be used with an air nailer but at the same time it would need to be quiet coz im modelling downstairs under my daughters bedroom . If i wake her whilst " being a geek" i'm gonna get the death stare .

i dont think it matters what you use on your airbrush, after all , all you are doing is putting a flow of air through the brush in order to draw the paint out. I think what is important is that what ever you use you need to make sure that you can regulate the flow of air and reduce it to a level that is suitable for use with the airbrush. Also you will need to make sure that you have the right connections etc

A lot of industrial compressors will incorporate an oiler to put oil vapour into the air stream to oil pneumatic tools. Obviously for air brush purposes clean dry air is required so there is a bit of a conflict of interests here.

You could have a set up and remove the oiler for airbrush use and fit a filter but, for the sake of the cost, a dedicated airbrush compressor isn't really all that expensive. If you look at the Clarke Shhh range of compressors they supply good enough quality air for airbrush use, can be fitted with an oiler for pneumatic tool use and are designed to be quiet. Downside is that they are not cheap! I have the 2/9 compressor and think it is fantastic. I use it for airbrush work, running in steam engines, testing steam plant, pumping up tyres and general workshop use.
