    Jock Maitland MBE has died

I just read this sad news in my local paper.

Former fighter pilot and originator of the Biggin Hill Air Fair Jock Maitland died aged 87 at his home last Friday. Here's a link to an article about him:

The tag " hero " is applied all to easily in our times . There goes one .............but a real one . Until you have walked a mile in another mans shoes . I went to do a job a while back at an elderly gentlemans house and thought i recognised his tie . turns out he was a mosquito pilot who did low level recce flights . I quizzed him about his time and he talked .....but in a completely english way. He refused to concede that he was in any way a hero or that he had done anything beyond the ordinary . We were different back then eh!!

Yes. Yet another whose hand I would be honoured to shake, but sadly will never get the chance to.

The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example. Yes it is a great Honour to shake the hands of men who have given so much. The stories they have makes you proud to be in the presence of courage.

RIP Jock, a true hero. I am off to St Nazaire next week for the 70th anniversary of HMS Campbeltown's raid and hope to meet some of the veterans. We should treasure these men whilst they are still with us.
