Painting tank tracks

Hi me again

Well i have tried not to ask this question and experiment for myself but i just dont seem to be able get it right.

Yes its painting tank tracks so they look as realistic as possible but no matter how i try i fail.

Could someone explain to me what colours and the process of painting them please.

I have tried to give them a rusty / oily look using light rust and dark rust and oily steel but they just dont look right

I would put the words "rust" or "Tank tracks" into the search box and see what you get. We have actually talked about this a lot in the past so there is quite a bit of info here already.

Hello all

I am still having problems with tracks but i guess the more i do the better i should get.

I think with being colour blind in shades of greens and browns it may be causing me problems.

Just thought i would post a few pics of my Trumpeter 1/16 M16 but i just need to weather it.

FANTASTIC!!!! Whats the problem then? Maybe dry brush a bit more steel (not silver or aluminum). Then add some burnt umber wash but they still look great and the build is incredible! Please keep up the great work, Dave

A few years ago i completed a german king tiger tank.

To creat a 'rusty' look i found that mixing the paint with a little talcum powder gives a authentic crusty muddy affect.

And i think it looks quite good.

You can't sand it thought as i will just turn to dust, but if you want the 'mud caked on look' then i think it looks good.

I see what you mean, the vehicle looks superb but the tracks could do with a little bit more work.

The trouble is that you have paint on the top of the relief detail and none in the receses. If you look at the tyres the dirt would be in the grooves and the top would be black where it has been worn away by the road. You have yours in a sort of negative effect!!

You need to get some paint right down into the recesses of the tyre treads and the tracks and then you can scuff the tops for a more realistic finish. The paint you get into the recesses can be, as porsche suggests, mixed with talc to give it some texture but you need to get it into the detail. Really stuff it in there with your brush, which probably won't survive the process so use an old one!

Have a look at these pictures for a bit of inspiration but don't be disheartened, they are actually 1/6th scale metal models so they should look pretty good.
