    Avatars/pseudonyms

    Hello Folks,

I'm curious, or if you prefer, nosey.

Why do so many of you post under an Avatar or assumed name?

I only use my own given name because I've nothing to hide. I am aware that this could be construed as arrogance.

On the other hand I'm somewhat lazy and couldn't be bothered to find a "Nom de Plume" anyway. If I did, I'd have to have some sort of reminder - it's enough to remember all the PINs and passwords we seem to need more of all the time.

Just an idle thought and there's no need for anyone to open up unless they really want to.

    Cheers,

    Malcolm

I`ve wondered that too, but being a novice in Cyberland I thought it was to stop hackers and so on doing nasties. The avatars on some aeromodelling site have glamorous aircraft or an aviation theme. Frankly I dont understand some of the ones on this forum, some are logical in a way, but others just ready-made mode-ish icons. signed Arrow5...oops..sorry Duncan. PS I do like smilies though.

You have a very valid point Malcolm but I can respect that some people like to remain anonymous, personally I have nothing to hide just a person who has always loved his hobbies and prepared to share experiences with others.

The internet has brought with it some strange new languages and practises, the constant need for passwords which we all loose ! and a wider road to follow our interests, the modelling world is literally our oyster and channelled like interests through forums like this one.

One thing is the respect for others we have here which from my experiences on some other boards is not always so,we must never loose sight of the fact that this is our hobby and just like John says we are never too old to learn things,I bet that not many people would like to go back to the pre internet days when we all worked as loners apart from when we met up at the flying field or boating pond for a chat ?

I think it's a lot to do with individuality, after all there's a lot of John's, Barry's etc so trying to register on a forum with your name is rather hard as it's usually taken, but trying to think of an individual name makes it easier to recognize someone especially if they are active on other forums.

Also Duncan the avatars are just a bunch of pre-made pics like you said, they aren't meant to represent anything, I just wanted to have some there, and there is always the option to upload your own.

I can vouch for what John said above; when I tried to sign up to another forum as Grahame back came the answer “taken”, the same when I added my surname.

I could have ended up with a name like “Grahame Wren born 23/07/1946 in Leicester now living in County Durham” which is rather cumbersome. I am of course being a bit facetious but “Greyhead” is certainly more user friendly.

If you join a forum early in its’ life then the problem isn’t as acute but it is convenient to have the same name on all sites hence the pseudonym.

As for the suitability of the Avatar “Greyhead”, the implied hair colour is certainly appropriate but the picture has more to do with my/ostrich legs, I’ll leave that to your imagination!!

I have to agree with John and Grahame above, I have tried to sign onto other sites only to find my own name already taken and some sites insist you have a user nickname rather than using your own name.

Hence the reason for my name on here, which also reflects the business I am in (I work in recording studios). My real name is also shown on the side of the post, so I have nothing to hide....that's all thee is too it really.

As for my Avatar, that was one of the preset one supplied by John which just happens to be a character from the Playstation Game "Heart of Darkness" (A lot of fun and very frustrating at times.....even though I am 41...!!!)

            Regards...........Mark.

Mark, I thought you might have been a hairdresser for ladies of a certain age:hehe: A sailing pal of mine stopped at Pictairn Island on a round the world jaunt with his family. When he introduced his son , Duncan, to some locals there was a mixture of embarassment and giggles. It was explained later that the local name for the toilet was dung can. If I ever get there I WILL be using a pseudonym !

Just for info....my latest tune would suit Ken P down to the ground with his Submarine....The track is called "Red October" which funnily enough started life with a sample of a Submarine Sonar.....it has now evolved into a big full on Club Dance Track......and all that starting with a Sub Sonar...!!

I can't upload it here as it is unfinished and is currently at 9.87Mb file size...!!

                    Regards........Mark. :music:

More commonly known round here as " sheep heeds" both white and purple rinse`s are very common. can be seen late evening in `Flocks` leaving certain bingo halls. and invading bus stops and off licences to the point of overfill. normally accopanied by cackling and a gaggling banter with the occasional daniel o`donnell song being struck up at the back.!!!!!

not a safe place to be after 9.30 pm .

                            Thanks Folks,

I hadn't thought about the implications of there being many people with the same name - I didn't meet another "Malcolm" until I was in my late teens so that might be something to do with it.

Any suggestions (preferably polite and printable}for a suitable pseudonym for an old, bald, bearded bowlegged individual obsessed with model aircraft?
