Hello all, new to modeling lots of questions!

Hi, I was just browsing on the computer while ill and stumbled upon this site. I have never built models, but have always wanted to do a project. I want to be a realistic 1/4 scale motocross bike. I know this is a very ambitious for someone with no modeling experience. I have read on here where people use lots of photos and cad programs to get the scale right. Once I get the scale, can I make the parts on a small cnc mill and lathe? I have seen them fairly affordable on ebay. Maybe you guys can point me in the right direction as to where to go to learn the skills I will need to do it.

I saw a video of a Ferrari 1/4 scale that actually runs. Absolutely incredible!!! I am not going to go so far as to have it run, but I do want to make the suspension work and wheels turn and what not. I appreciate any and all input!

Hi UK and welcome to the site,

Your proposed project is certainly within the realms of possibilty and yes you should be able to turn the parts out on a cnc mill / lathe if you know how to use it.

Here's an excellent example from this very site, have a look, if this does not wet your appetite to have a go, I don't know what will !!

The workmanship on this has to be seen to be believed .

Thanks Mark, I did see that. Absolutely incredible. That is exactly what I want to do, but with dirt bikes. Would I be able to learn to run a cnc mill good enough to do this in a few months?

        Hi UK,

As for learning your skills on the CNC Mill maybe that is a question you should ask Modelmaker (The builder of the bike on that thread I posted) There is no reason why you cannot adapt the same skills for a dirt-bike. They do share a lot in common so I am sure modelmaker can put you on the right track here (pun intended !!)

For your chosen scale, the materials should be quite easy to obtain and work with too !!

        Regards...........Mark
