    Whats your favourite war film?

Hi All, as my laptop has given up on me & I can't see all the new stuff being posted except in tiny pics on my phone, I thought I'd find out what war films people like. This is especially topical with Christmas not far off so we're bound to get 'The Battle of the Bulge' in all it's unrealistic glory! To start us off, one of my faves is Cross of Iron, if only for seeing T-34's in action! Patrick

Wow, fav war film. That question is harder than the meaning of life! Being only 31 i maybe don't appreciate the older more traditional ones but i would have to say the three war films i love (impossible for me to choose one) are The Longest Day, A bridge Too Far and Full Metal Jacket.

Despite loving the above films i do have a best war scene: In the Battle of Britain where an officer says in German "we'll attack the north of England witht the Geschwade from Norway." To which he is told from a subordinate, "But that's out of range for our fighters." The over-optimistic and smug general maintains, "But the RAF can't be simunltaniously in the south and north..." Flicks to the next scene where a fleet of Heinkels flying from Norway to Newcastle gets a major beating by a group of Spitfires!

I think i'll go and watch that now

Battle of the bulge Scott? Even with all the german tanks being Pershings? And all in grey! Still, it's an enjoyable hour & a half for all that if you ignore the failings of Hollywood ;-) Patrick

Saving private Ryan, and not so much a film, but the Band of Brothers series.

You know Ron, i forgot Saints And Soldiers. Good film that is, got it on DVD. Forgot this one too, Tuskegee Airmen, not much of a war film but a very good story behind it.

I've never heard of that one Ron, but I'll keep my eye open for it next time I'm in HMV. One more that I can mention and although it's strictly speaking a Cold War film, is Failsafe. Not the re-make of a few years back but the 50's original. For those who don't know it, it's about how a group of American nuclear bombers leave their 'failsafe' holding points while on a drill after receiving a false 'go' signal. Trained to ignore all other commands, the bombers penetrate Soviet defenses in their mission to hit Moscow, leading to the Russians & Americans to work together to prevent the terrible consequences were the bomb to fall. It's full of tension & gives a very accurate sense of the ever-present threat of the era of people with their fingers on the 'button'. I won't spoil the ending, suffice to say that it's unexpected & shockingly unusual, especially for a Hollywood film. If you find a copy, buy it as you won't regret it.

My son reminded me of this one..'Days of glory' made in 2006, this low budget film is up there with the best. It's about a group of Algerian lads from a little village who join the American army in WW2 looking for a bit of adventure..........Gripping and very, very moving.

                            Get it.

It's got to be Twelve O'Clock High

Not to forget the RAF bomber crews that also gave their lives in WWII, even if it is in black and white, Twelve O'Clock High has got to be the film that records the sacrifice and raises the hairs on my arms. I can watch it over and over again. And not to forget the other side - Das Boot.

                              Ade.
