How do you experts do that!! (tank tracks)

Looking at the photos of your "works of art" the one thing I would like to know is how do you get your tank tracks on your kits to look like real tracks, I have looked at the paint range and seen nothing similar, can anyone please advise

Hi mate,

I wouldn't describe myself as an expert & some of the other guys maybe better placed to help you, but my way is like this:

1. Spray the tracks dark brown to start

2. A heavy dry-brush with Humbrol rust 113 (all over)

3. A lighter dry-brush with Humbrol leather 062 (on areas where the wheels don't touch)

4. A very light dry-brush with Humbrol flesh 061 (as above)

5. Run a graphite pencil over the areas of contact with the road-wheels & the wheels & sprocket teeth for a silvered effect & buff that with a fingertip.

Attached are a couple of pics to hopefully illustrate what I mean.

Everyone has their pet method and I would think no two are the same.

Here is mine.(all enamel, thinned with turps.)

Lay the tracks flat on a board, paint both sides with a well diluted dk.grey, then same in brown whilst the grey is wet. Then brown/red for a bit of rust, don't over do it! I don't like the bought rust one bit, it's far too orange. 'Working' rust is more brown. Then, with the smallest amount of silver on the brush go along the track links. This gives the tracks that shiny look where they come in contact with the road.

Fit the tracks and then on with the mud/ sand/ snow/ dust, whatever.

Job done. I have included 2 pictures 1 with mud and snow, the other dust.

I've just read your thread again kelvgood, expert, me!!? My definition of expert...ex = unknown quantity and a spurt is a drip under pressure! LOL

I'm not one of those, but I am still on the learning curve and I will be until I turn my toes up.

But I have sent you my method earlier, anyway.

i use exactly the same methods already stated,

however for modern tracks that have the 'inbuilt rubber pads' i lightly sand the 'raised' pads, just to give them the scuffed up look.

I use somthing called instant rust its a two part compound, apply the first compound all over the tracks and allow i hour to dry then apply the second part of the compound and leave over night ot dry, you have now got rusty tracks but i always apply a light spray of tamiya flat earth xf 52 to the whole of the tracks once dry have a look at my pics of my tiger 1 and my tutorial on winter weathering for the visual effect.
