    Tamiya acrylic thinner

    Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can buy a large size of Tamiya's acrylic thinner? All the websites I've looked at seem to be out of stock of the 250ml size & I'm going through the little pots too quickly!

    TIA Patrick

    Sorry Patrick,

    Not good news I'm afraid...

I'm also finding that Tamiya's large acrylic thinner to be extremely ellusive and expensive! So I've opted for a very common (and much cheaper) solution and use surgical spirits from Boots the Chemist - roughly £1.50 a pint. Does the job of thinning my tamiya and Vallejo paints very nicely. Other than that I know you can use windolene.

ermm, one place that does sell it is ebay; for £5.45 but via singapore with an extra £6.66 postage! Expensive stuff....

Sorry I can't help any more.

Thanks Chris, I have tried a few alternatives such as surgical spirit, rubbing alcohol etc but I've found that they're more likely to give a sandy, almost grainy finish-although that might be my poor airbrushing technique! I was talking to a guy in my Tokyo office & he says it's down to EU rules about importing the stuff because it's considered hazardous (flammable). I'm thinking of arranging an import of a large amount & then selling part of it on at reasonable prices.

91% Isopropyl Alcohol will work fine. I still perfer the Tamiya though as its less quick to dry and results in a smoother surface. I always use 91%ISA with Neutral Grey for testing seam lines and other Jeff defects................

          Hi Patrick

Yeah, I have had that effect before if you dilute too much with the surgical spirit. Heh, you can get the rough finish or even the dreaded orange peel or crows feet effect. I try to test before applying but you're all right - Tamiya is really good stuff. I have over a dozen empty 10ml bottles rolling about the place! Well, It could be a profitable little enterprize there Patrick - do I get discount?

Hi Chris, those empty pots do come in handy for storing little amounts of paint left over! As for a discount, if it comes off then the guys on here will get first dibs & a special price! Patrick
