Basically they're banned because the symbol is illegal in many countries.

They aren't banned in the UK or many other countries. They are strictly regulated in Germany and some other countries. In Germany scale models are legally classified as toys and can not therefore wear a swastika. You just have to respect other peoples' sensitivity over the issue.

I know modellers here in the UK who do not put them on their models. I do but I understand why they don't.

You can obtain sheets of swastikas in different scales and styles from places like Hannants.

Political correctness may be irritating at times but it's a long, long way from nazism!!

Cheers because like I said I started up again and only noticed the other week that there was none in the decals but at least i found the place to get em ...

But I sure if ya seen a stuka coming at ya its not the sybal you would think of but the plane plus I think if one thing gets banned it should be all of it because the planes and guns was all part of the nazis and the sybal but better not tell the P.Cs that or they would want everythink banned lol

It's a bit more complicated as far as markings go! The square crosses (Balkenkreuz) you see on Luftwaffe aircraft are national markings equivalent to our roundels. The swastika (Hakenkreuz) was a symbol of the NSDAP or nazi party and hence was, and is, considered a political symbol.

So is the Soviet red star,a symbol of the Bolshevik party, but they were on the winning side!

Well I've got German friends & they take it very seriously, even the younger generations. And you have to respect the feelings of other people, not just those who lost family or friends because of the Nazis twisted ideas but also the veterans who fought in the war. My grandad who served on submarines hated the symbol, and no matter what it was painted on, it was a sign of the racist regime that it represented. But for the pc brigade out there, remember than Stalin killed way more of his people than Hitler: 30 million or more in the Ukraine in '31-32 alone & the Red Star isn't banned. History is always written by the victors. Patrick

Patrick, you hit the nail on the head mate. As the Germans say, Die Sieger schreiben die Geschichte (The victors write history).

I think there's being PC over pointless and untrivial things like banning school pantos and not calling young people 'Youths'. But the Hakenkreuz is something pretty severe as a portrayal of a supressive and murdurous regime. Interestingly enough the Nazis were'nt the first to use it. The Hakenkreuz dates back centuries and was used by members of the Hindu and Buddhist faith and had positive connotations.

I understand what you are saying Patrick but we'd better stick to modelling rather than politics (even if we essentially agree) or we'll get told off!

I'll just say that putting a swastika on a model no more makes me a nazi than putting on a red star would make me a Stalinist. We are lucky to live in a country where the choice is ours. Also a country which respects the choices others make. We should never forget what this has cost.

Well said, Steve. My view about modelling & the application of correct details is simply for authenticity. But as we're getting into a potentially dodgy grey area, I'm gonna get back to painting my King Tiger! Patrick

You could also just make the masks out of tape and apply the paint. Make sure a good Leffe is at your side along with "Der Ring des Nibelungen" playing in the background:dancing1:
