    Airfix Club

Hi all, just wondering if anyone around here is a member of the Airfix club? I'm thinking about joining however wondered if it was worth it? I would consider subscribing to the postal option which is more costly as when it comes to magazines etc I prefer reading the old fashioned way! Your thoughts would be appreciated on the value of the club and benefits.

    Thanks

Hi Ian, hopefully someone will tell us?

The recent build review in Airfix Model World of the 2012 kit got me thinking as it looks a nice kit. I know i have a few airfix tokens knocking about so could possibly put to use also.

It does say on the website there are other benefits such as discounts however I cant see info for where, I am also wondering as to the content and quality of the mags?

      Cheers

i have been toying with the idea for a few months as well, and at the moment i am undecided but i beleive the "free" kit that you get is not that good, think i read that in airfix model world which is amusing.

I am a member as of about 1 week ago so I can't really tell you much about it as I haven't received my membership pack yet

I went for the download option and I can tell you that the magazine is around 20 pages of vaguely Airfix based articles and advertising, nice looking but I'm glad I didn't pay extra for a paper version

im a member since last year and i cant really say that it is much to wrote home about. i joined the postal version. i dont think i will renew. but it was something i did when i first started to model and thought it would help me in tips and help but alas not to much lol.

admittedly there were a couple of articles that helped a little but it is mostly adverts and more of a pamphlet than a magazine.

you get a nice calendar and a little book like thing to stick in your tokens that are on the airfix boxes so that you can claim a free model or something.

i seem to have painted a grim picture of it. it was ok but i wont re-subscribe on renewal day.

            hope this kind of helped.

            cheers

When i enquired about the club on starting up modeling again, not one of my friends that have (or had) membership to the club had anything really positive to say about it, and they all said that joining a good forum is better for hints, tips etc and to put my money towards a good model... hence i'm on here.

the last magazine passed on to me was 90% adverts and pro-mo's for new kits not in my genre, and was a bit of a flat read to be honest.

Hello I joined about two years ago and for one year only. You get a pointless badge to wear, a pointless membership card and a good limited edition model. Then you get access to the newsletter which was, in those days, of limited use - I 've not seen it for a couple of years. To be honest I never found the discounts to be that appealing. Amazon seem to be a more attractive prospect regarding cost. I visited the Hornby exhibition at Margate at the weekend and they have a shop which sells Airfix and Humbrol goods, and their kits are more expensive. Eg the Seafire is, as I write this, £1 more expensive than Amazon. That does not include postage but I think Airfix charge for postage too. Not wanting to put anyone off - it may be better now, and Andy is the one to tell us once his pack comes through.

I was thinking about joining also, but kinda put off now after reading all the above posts. I do subscribe to Fine scale Modeler and I get the old fashioned magazine, I find its a good mag with some really good articles, the special edition ones are well worth having and cover topics such as Paint and weather scale models, Build better model aircraft, ideal for me that still has a lot to learn All that said the one copy I have of airfix magazine does have asome good features on building and enhancing your builds.

Cheers chaps for all the feedback.

My mind is made up and have decided to give it a miss and put some of the money along with some gift vouchers on the kit below that was on offer at MZ....so much for sticking to what I said at Cosford and resisting in buying any more kits as the stash is getting ever bigger!

Hi roconnell I recently Registered as an Airfix Member for 2013 and the package is actually really good price for money and the club kit, in my opinion,is the best released.

Under the Red star kit's only fault is the Spitfire mk 5. The detailing isn't that good but it is still a great value on money.

I highly reccomend the download version as they give you access to the previous Magazines.

                      Cheers,

I've been a member since this version of the Airfix Club started up a few years ago but I suspect my reasons may be slightly different to the majority. If you are joining simply to get more out of it than you put in then it may be a dissapointment. The annual kit is interesting, different and may be ultimately a collectors piece and the newsletter is probably of more value to youngsters than more experienced modellers however I joined simply for no other reason than to support the hobby. I have made plastic kits since I was a youngster working in a model shop on Saturdays in the early seventies and have seen the slow decline in interest over the years as we move to a more disposable society and the creation of a generation of youngsters who want a quick fix and a fast return for everything they do.

Modelling has given me such a huge amount of pleasure over the years and I firmly believe it is a foundation of an enquiring and creative mind that is missing so much nowadays. I was really saddened to see Airfix fold a few years ago but was extreemly relieved when Humbrol took up the mantle and breathed some fresh life into it. I know it is now Chinese backed however it still provides jobs in the UK and more importantly it helps to generate an interest in the hobby that I would hate to see die out. For that reason alone I joined as soon as it became available and I'm a very proud member of the Airfix Club. They actually do a lot of really good work providing workshops for youngsters, donating kits for good causes and generally promoting the hobby. If my subscription helps them to do that then I see it as money well spent.

The Airfix Club is actually a good value for money as you recieve three Aircraft this year. The pack includes magazines, catalogues, comps, badges, the flying hour scheme, discounts, calendar and the club kit. Under the Red Star is a really good kit for 2013 as it contains a Spitfire Mk 5, P 40 Warhawk and a Hawker Hurricane Mk 2. The only flaw in the kit is the Detailing of the Spitfire Mk 5. I joined and just recieved it this week.
